Academy generation adidas in Orlando

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution’s Under-16 team traveled down to Sanford, Florida, last weekend to take part in the final preliminary stage of the Generation adidas Cup. The Revs went 1-2-0 in their three games in Florida, falling 2-1 to tournament host Orlando City SC on Friday, Feb. 13 before defeating the New York Red Bulls 4-1 on penalty kicks after tying 1-1 in regulation time the following day. The Revs U-16s then suffered a 4-1 defeat to D.C. United in their final game of the competition on Monday, Feb. 16.

The Revolution U-16s finished sixth in the East Region with a 0-3-2 record and qualified to the ESP bracket where the Revs’ Generation adidas play will resume with a trip to Dallas, Texas in April. The Revs began their tournament play in October, going 0-1-1 after beating Philadelphia on penalty kicks following a 0-0 tie, and losing 2-1 to Toronto. Of the six teams in the East Region, the top two qualify for the GA bracket, while the remaining four teams qualify to the ESP bracket.

The U-16s opened their weekend with a 2-1 loss to host team Orlando City SC on Friday, February 13. After David Lorea gave Orlando a 1-0 lead in the 56th minute, Izaiah Jennings (Barrington, R.I.) equalized for the Revs in the 62nd minute. Aaron James (Amherst, Mass.) played a ball through the defense and Jennings lifted the ball over the Orlando goalkeeper, tying the score at 1-1. However, Orlando pulled in front for good just six minutes later, as Mario Licor scored what proved to be the game-winning goal. Revs goalkeeper Trey Miller (Monson, Mass.) made two saves in the defeat.

Miller was the hero the following day, saving two penalty kicks as the Revolution beat the New York Red Bulls on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation. The Revs went ahead in the 11th minute, with Jennings scoring his second goal in as many games. A Matt Ranieri (Natick, Mass.) throw-in found Jennings streaking into the box, and he fired a low shot past the Red Bulls goalkeeper, giving his side a 1-0 lead. The Revs maintained their advantage until the final minute of play, when Ryan Mingachos scored for New York to send the game to penalty kicks. The Revs converted all four of their penalties with Andrew Barrowman (Marshfield, Mass.), Isaque Couto (Marlborough, Mass.), James and Max Diamond (Hopedale, Mass.) each scoring from the spot, while Miller, who had already made five saves in regulation time, stopped two of the Red Bulls’ three penalty attempts to give his team the win.

In their final game of the preliminary stage of the Generation adidas Cup, the Revolution suffered a 4-1 defeat to D.C. United on Monday. Christophe Koffi scored twice in the first half to give D.C. a 2-0 lead before Shaun McKenna added a third in the 63rd minute. Ranieri pulled a goal back for the Revs in the 67th minute, as he calmly finished past the D.C. goalkeeper after James had cut the ball back from the end line to make the score 3-1. However, the Revs’ comeback was cut short when D.C. sealed the victory with a fourth goal in the final minute of play as Collin Jouan tucked away a penalty kick. Revolution goalkeeper Eddie Walsh (Westwood, Mass.) made four saves in his first appearance of the competition.

The Revolution’s Under-18, Under-16 and Under-14 teams will resume U.S. Soccer Development Academy action next month, when they take on Seacoast United on March 7 at Gillette Stadium.
