Columbus claimed the No. 3 seed following their 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Union this afternoon at Crew Stadium and Sporting Kansas City’s 2-0 loss to the New York Red Bulls tonight at Sporting Park.

The Revolution and Crew played three times this season, with Columbus winning the season series against New England with a 2-1-0 advantage. The Crew earned a 2-1 win at Gillette Stadium on July 26, and a 1-0 win at Crew Stadium on September 20. The Revolution won the third and final meeting, claimed a 2-1 win in Foxborough on October 4.

The teams have played two previous series in the MLS Cup Playoffs, both in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. In 2002, the teams played a three-game, first-to-five-points series with the Revolution going 1-0-2 in the three matches to advance. In 2004, the teams met again in a two-game, aggregate-goal series with the Revolution again winning and advancing to the Eastern Conference Championship behind a 1-0-1 mark in the series.
