Lee Nguyen one of five nominees for October MLS player of the month

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – New England Revolution midfielder and MLS MVP candidate Lee Nguyen is one of five nominees for the MLS Etihad Airways Player of the Month award for October. In helping the Revs go 3-0-1 and claim second place in the Eastern Conference, Nguyen scored a league-best five goals in four games during the month, including two game-winning goals and one game-tying goal.

Voting for the October player of the month is now open at mlssoccer.com, and will remain open until 3 a.m. ET on Thursday, October 30. The October Etihad Airways player of the month will be announced on mlssoccer.com later Thursday morning.


Nguyen is nominated with:


  • Columbus midfielder Ethan Finaly: three goals, two assists in four games … team went 3-1-0 in October
  • Seattle forward Obafemi Martins: two goals, three assists in four games … team went 2-1-1 in October
  • Portland midfielder Rodney Wallace: three goals in four games … team went 3-0-1 in October
  • Vancouver defender Kendall Waston: one goal; four team shutouts … team went 3-0-1 in October


Nguyen (#MVLee) has emerged as one of the leading candidates for MLS MVP this season, scoring 18 goals and adding five assists for the Revs, who equaled a club record with 17 wins this season. His 18 goals on the year were the fourth most in MLS this season and the most ever by a pure midfielder in the league. He also led MLS with nine game-winning goals, the second-highest single-season total in league history.


The Revs went 14-1-2 when he scored a goal or added an assist this season, and during the last 14 games of the campaign – when the Revs rose from seventh to second in the Eastern Conference standings – Nguyen scored 12 goals and added four assists.


This is the second consecutive month that Nguyen has been nominated for the league’s player of the month award.
