Back to the Grind: Revs prepared for grittier matches as the playoffs draw near

Scott Caldwell vs. Portland Timbers

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Jay Heaps said last Saturday night’s win over the Columbus Crew “had that feel of the playoffs.” Not only was it cold and wet – typical fall weather in New England – but the game was a gritty battle as neither team wanted to give anything away with so much on the line.

The Revs expect their three remaining regular-season games to unfold in similar fashion, beginning with this weekend’s visit to Stade Saputo, where they can officially secure a second consecutive postseason berth with a win over the Montreal Impact.

“The stakes are raised at this point in the year,” said Chris Tierney. “Everyone’s fighting for position in the playoffs or just to get into the playoffs, so the games mean a lot.

“The games all year do, but especially this time of year, you really have to be at your best. I think you see the best out of both teams and it usually makes for a pretty exciting game.”

It also tends to make for more intense matches, often decided in part by sheer will and determination. Implementing and executing a game plan still rules the day, but there’s an extra edge which tends to add a physical element to the proceedings.

“As it comes down close to the playoffs and in the playoffs, those are the type of games you need to win,” said Scott Caldwell. “It seems like these games get more physical and grittier as they go on.”

If the Revs can grind out another win on Saturday – what would be an eighth victory in the last nine games – they’ll assure themselves a spot in the MLS Cup Playoffs. And against a dangerous Impact side, they’re prepared to do whatever’s necessary to make that a reality.

“It’s vital for us to go there and to get points in the game in some way, shape or form,” said Heaps.
