Stephen McCarthy undergoes knee surgery

Stephen McCarthy vs. Richmond Kickers

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – New England Revolution defender Stephen McCarthy underwent surgery on his left knee this morning surgery to repair a torn meniscus that he suffered in training earlier this month. Head team physician Dr. Scott Martin performed a meniscus repair on McCarthy at Faulkner Hospital in Jamaica Plain, Mass. and the fourth-year defender is expected to need approximately six weeks to rehabilitate from the procedure.

McCarthy, 26, has made four appearances in all competitions season, scoring in the 3-2 win over the Richmond Kickers on June 18 in the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup. His only league appearance came on July 19 when he started in central defense in New England’s 2-0 loss away to FC Dallas.

Additionally, the club has removed midfielder Andy Dorman from the Disabled List, meaning that he is now eligible to return to the field. Dorman, 32, was originally placed on the Disabled List on July 15 after suffering a sprained medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his right knee in the team’s July 12 match against the Chicago Fire. Dorman has appeared in and started 15 regular-season games this season, tallying one assist. He missed two of the club’s first 17 games before suffering his injury midway through the first half of a 1-0 loss to Chicago.

While Dorman’s injury is anticipated to need 10-12 total weeks for recovery, he has been removed from the Disabled List ahead of the MLS roster freeze date on September 15, so that he will be available for selection after the roster freeze. Had he not been removed from the Disabled List ahead of Monday’s freeze, Dorman would not have been available for selection the remainder of the season and the MLS Cup Playoffs.
