FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Almost on queue New Englanders could annually sync that start of the summer season with the Revolution reaching the 20 point mark.
Not this year, as the Revs have reached that point quicker than in any other season in club history and it’s the latest into a season that New England has held the top spot in the Eastern Division since 2008.
Despite the growing buzz humming around the area, the team knows that it is a little premature to start talking about any of that.
“It’s so early in the season that talks about being tops in the East don’t really mean anything,” said Teal Bunbury to the media on Tuesday. “It’s great for our fans, it’s great for our confidence that we’re doing well and getting wins.”
In the midst of a six game unbeaten streak, and a four game win streak, the club continues to find it’s rhythm in a balanced attack that has especially come together over the last three weeks.
The team’s 19 goals, 17 of which have come over the last six games, gives them the third most in the MLS, and their defense, which is about to return captain Jose Goncalves to the mix, has been impenetrable much of the way.
“We take it a game at a time,” added Bunbury. “Playoffs are still a long ways away. Our mindset and our competitiveness and our enjoyment out there is showing a lot.”
The team’s current win streak is the longest the team has enjoyed since they rattled off a club record six in a row back in 2005 when the team went 7-0-4 to start theseason.
Although the start to this season did not mirror 2005, the current results are beginning to line up with that squad that made a run to the MLS Cup, which could eventually throw off the autumnal calendars in the region.
“We haven’t done anything yet,” said Heaps, who played on that 2005 squad. “We still have a lot of games ahead of us and we’re going one game at a time and we have D.C. coming up on Saturday.”
