FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – All three of the New England Revolution’s youth teams welcomed fellow MLS academy Montreal Impact to Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., on Sunday, March 16, sweeping the visitors with a perfect 3-0-0 record. The Under-18s kicked off the day at 10 a.m., winning an exciting game 4-2, before later 2-1 and 3-2 victories by the Under-16s and Under-14s, respectively.
UNDER-18s
The Under-18s started the day with a high-scoring fixture against the Montreal Impact, and earned a 4-2 win. The Revolution were out of the blocks quickly, taking the lead in the fifth minute after Gio Alves (Pawtucket, R.I.) scored following a goalmouth scramble from a corner kick. The Revs doubled their lead in the 29th minute when Daniel Apajee (Cranston, R.I.) turned and finished after being set up by Christian Sady’s (North Andover, Mass.) darting run and pass. The Impact pulled a goal back just two minutes after halftime through Haris Radoncic, and quickly leveled the score after Samuel Duffek equalized in the 55th minute. The stalemate lasted only two minutes as Apajee got his second of the match from the penalty spot after Zachary Herivaux (Brookline, Mass.) was brought down in the 57th minute. Apajee then turned provider for Sady to seal the victory in added time, beating two players before crossing for his teammate to finish from close range. The result boosted the U18s to a 5-5-2 (17 pts.) record, and helped close the gap on the top five teams in the East Conference of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy, where the Revs currently sit sixth with 1.42 points per game.
UNDER-16s
The Under-16s continued the winning habit, topping the Montreal Impact, 2-1. The Revolution took the lead after 11 minutes, when Daniel Jones (West Hartford, Conn.) finished into the bottom corner off Aaron James’ (Amherst, Mass.) cross. Montreal came back strong and tied the game through Thomas Meilleur Giguere in the 51st minute. Undeterred, Jones grabbed his second – and the game-winning goal – in the 64th minute, placing the ball into the lower corner off a cross from Dylan Mott (Andover, Mass.), and the Revs kept Montreal at bay for the remainder of the game. Now with a 5-5-3 (18 pts.) record, the U16s sit in sixth place in the East Conference of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy with 1.38 points per game.
UNDER-14s
The Under-14s concluded the day with a friendly match against the Montreal Impact, coming out victorious in a thrilling 3-2 win. The Revolution went ahead in spectacular fashion, as Christian Schifano (Sudbury, Mass.) curled a direct free kick over the wall and into the net in the 13th minute. The Revs gained some breathing space in the 28th minute when Alex Clarke (Windsor, Conn.) caused a turnover before setting up Isaac Angking (Providence, R.I.), who fired the ball past the Montreal goalkeeper from just inside the area. The two-goal lead lasted only a minute as Alexis Stevens immediately pulled one back for the Impact in the 29th minute. However, the Revs restored their two-goal advantage in the 51st minute, when Connor Haskell (Medfield, Mass.) scored after Calvin Aroh (Glastonbury, Conn.) had headed down a corner kick from Angking. Montreal clawed within a goal in the 78th minute but it was too little, too late, and the Revs saw out the 3-2 victory. Since Sunday’s meeting was only a friendly, the U14s’ record remains 7-2-1.
All three youth teams return to action this coming weekend, as they travel to Mount Ida College in Newton, Mass., to face the FC Boston Bolts on Sunday, March 23.
