Revolution Rewind: Fagundez bursts onto the national scene with stellar year

Diego Fagundez vs. Toronto FC

Through his first two professional seasons, Diego Fagundez registered four goals and three assists in 26 appearances. Those are undoubtedly impressive numbers for a teenager, but far from gaudy.

So when Fagundez burst onto the scene with 13 goals and seven assists and established himself as an everyday starter in a breakout 2013 campaign, it surprised many in MLS circles; Fagundez included.

“It was an amazing season for me,” said the 18-year-old wunderkind shortly after becoming the youngest Revolution MVP in team history. “I didn’t think I was going to have this season, but anything’s possible.”

Fagundez began turning heads when he scored goals in four straight matches from May 11 to June 2, culminating with a one-goal, two-assist performance in a nationally televised 5-0 drubbing of the two-time defending MLS Cup champion LA Galaxy. As NBC Sports Network play-by-play man Arlo White proclaimed, a star was born.

And Fagundez’s star never faded. His propensity for bagging big goals at crucial moments is evidenced through his five game-winning strikes; none bigger than his 76th-minute winner in the regular-season home finale against the Columbus Crew.

Perhaps the only thing more palpable than Fagundez’s talent is his love for the game. He plays with pure joy and it shines through in his free-flowing, creative style. He cherishes every minute on the field.

Likewise, Revolution fans cherish every minute they have the pleasure of watching him. So we’ve made it easy by putting together a highlight package of Fagundez’s 13 goals from this past season. Enjoy.
