FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Bobby Shuttleworth needed to make just one save as the New England Revolution’s league-best defense was stellar yet again in a 0-0 draw with D.C. United on Saturday night at Gillette Stadium.

The draw snapped the Revolution’s three-game winning streak but did extend the club’s unbeaten run to five games (3-0-2), while D.C. United’s club-record winless run has now reached 12 matches (0-9-3).

Shuttleworth’s clean sheet was his seventh of the season – and New England’s league-leading ninth of the campaign – and extended the Revolution’s shutout streak to 395 minutes, the longest in team history. The Revs have now kept four straight clean sheets and haven’t conceded a goal since May 11.

Chances were limited in the opening stages as both teams lacked sharpness in the final third, but the game began to open up as the first half progressed. Scott Caldwell and Juan Toja forced a pair of saves out of D.C. goalkeeper Bill Hamid near the half-hour mark, sandwiched around a Chris Pontius effort which Shuttleworth was alert to kick away at the near post.

The Revs made a pair of attack-minded changes early in the second half – bringing on Kelyn Rowe and Chad Barrett – and almost found a goal in the immediate aftermath. Diego Fagundez saw his rising shot fly just over the crossbar after a mazy run through the middle, while Chris Tierney struck the near post with a right-footed effort just one minute later.

Hamid made two quality saves in the closing stages, denying Lee Nguyen in the 88th minute and Rowe just two minutes later, while United midfielder Perry Kitchen headed wide from a promising position in stoppage time as neither side managed to make the breakthrough.

Next up for the Revs is a fourth-round U.S. Open Cup meeting with the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday, June 12, which the Revolution will host at Harvard University’s Soldiers Field Soccer Stadium. The Revs will return to league action next weekend when they visit Vancouver Whitecaps FC at BC Place.
