FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Five different players scored goals as the New England Revolution rolled to a 5-0 win over the two-time defending MLS Cup champion LA Galaxy on Sunday afternoon at Gillette Stadium.

Saer Sene – making his first league start since tearing his ACL last August – scored his first goal of the season midway through the first half before Lee Nguyen doubled New England’s lead after the break, but Diego Fagundez (87th minute), Chad Barrett (91st minute) and Kelyn Rowe (94th minute) piled it on late to provide the final score line.

Goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth made six saves and center back Jose Goncalves was immense once again to help the Revs keep their league-leading eighth clean sheet of the season. The victory was the Revolution’s third straight in league play – all by shutout – and the five-goal win matched the largest margin of victory in club history.

The visitors were actually on top early and generated three quality chances in the opening 10 minutes. Gyasi Zardes blasted into the outside of the net from a promising position before Marcelo Sarvas and Juninho forced Shuttleworth to tip a pair of long-range drives over the crossbar.

But it was the home side which opened the scoring in the 33rd minute when Sene and Fagundez combined to open up the Galaxy’s backline. Cutting in from the right wing, Sene played a clever one-two with Fagundez which sprang the Frenchman into the box, where he curled a perfectly placed shot off the inside of the far post and in.

Fagundez almost set up a second in the 44th minute when he teed up Juan Toja inside the box, but Toja’s low drive was blocked and the Revs carried a one-goal lead into the break.

The lead was eventually extended to 2-0 in the 71st minute, however, when Nguyen notched his second goal of the season after a quickly-taken free kick. Cutting inside toward goal from the right wing, Nguyen’s quick-release shot caught Galaxy goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini flat-footed and rolled inside the near post.

Fagundez – New England’s leading scorer with five goals on the season – extended his goal-scoring streak to four games in the 87th minute when he combined with Rowe down the left side, slicing into the box and finishing past Cudicini from close range.

Cudicini was beaten again in the first minute of stoppage time when Barrett – playing against his former club – scored his first Revolution goal to make it 4-0. After taking a feed from Rowe across the top of the box, Barrett blasted home into the roof of the net to provide what seemed like the final dagger.

But there was time for one more in the fourth minute of stoppage time as Rowe added to his two assists with a goal of his own, curling home from distance to put an exclamation point on an emphatic victory.

The Revs will look to make it a clean sweep of their three-game homestand next weekend when they host D.C. United on Saturday, June 8.
