Final USOC: Revs 5, Rhinos 1

Kelyn Rowe vs. Rochester Rhinos

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Kelyn Rowe had two goals and one assist to lead the rampant New England Revolution to a 5-1 win over the Rochester Rhinos (USL PRO) in a third-round Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup meeting on Tuesday night at rain-soaked Sahlen’s Stadium.

The Revs will now host either the New York Red Bulls (MLS) or Reading United AC (PDL) in the fourth round of the competition on Wednesday, June 12 at Harvard University. New York and Reading meet in the third round on Wednesday, May 29.

Tuesday night’s match was delayed for almost an hour early in the second half when lightning rolled through the area, but it couldn’t halt the Revolution’s offensive explosion. Rowe and Andy Dorman scored to give the Revs a 2-0 lead before the delay, while Chad Barrett, Jerry Bengtson and Rowe scored on the other side of the delay to round out the Revolution’s scoring.

Rochester – an affiliate club of the Revolution – registered a consolation goal through Kendell McFayden in the 77th minute.

Both sides created a series of half chances in the early stages, but it wasn’t until the 23rd minute that the Revolution took a 1-0 lead through Rowe. Barrett worked his way from left to right across the box before laying a pass back to Rowe, who curled a first-time effort into the far upper corner from 18 yards.

Rowe came inches from doubling New England’s advantage two minutes later, but his shot struck the post at the end of a scramble in the box.

Rochester had a golden chance to pull level before the halftime break when the ball popped free to Tyler Rosenlund at the top of the box, but the former Toronto FC midfielder directed his 39th-minute shot narrowly wide.

It didn’t take long for the Revs to add a second after the interval as Dorman extended New England’s lead to 2-0 in the 53rd minute. The veteran midfielder took a feed from Rowe and finished calmly into the upper right corner from the center of the box.

But as Dorman scored, lightning almost simultaneously halted the match, which was delayed for 52 minutes.

The delay didn’t halt the Revolution’s attack, however, as Bengtson – who replaced Saer Sene at halftime – made it 3-0 just moments after the match was restarted. The Honduran striker intercepted a loose back-pass and slotted his shot underneath charging Rhinos goalkeeper Brandon Miller.

Rowe notched his second goal to make it 4-0 in the 64th minute with a strong individual effort. After receiving a pass from Tyler Polak – recalled from Rochester along with Gabe Latigue for the match – Rowe worked his way past a Rhinos defender down the left side before finishing to the far post with the outside of his right foot.

The Rhinos pulled one back in the 77th minute when McFayden’s 25-yard curler kissed the inside of the post and settled into the upper corner, but Barrett restored the Revolution’s four-goal lead in the 81st minute when he used a clever back-heel flick to finish a Darrius Barnes setup.

McFayden’s night ended short of the final whistle as he was issued a straight red card in the 90th minute.

The Revs return to league play on Sunday, June 2, when they’ll host the two-time defending MLS Cup champion LA Galaxy at Gillette Stadium. NBC Sports Network will televise the game nationally at 4:30 p.m.
