Feilhaber Unavailable for Home Finale
Although the Revs are off this weekend with a FIFA international break, Benny Feilhaber will be unavailable when the team plays its next game on Oct. 20 against Chicago … Feilhaber will miss the match while serving a mandatory one-game suspension after receiving a red card following his second yellow card in the 88th minute of Saturday’s match at Philadelphia … the red card is Feilhaber’s second of his MLS career and first of the season.
Rare Red Card for Revs
Benny Feilhaber’s second yellow card and subsequent red card in the 88th minute on Saturday was a rare sight for the Revs this season … the only other times the Revs have seen red were Stephen McCarthy’s ejection on March 17 at Kansas City and Fernando Cardenas’ initial red card at Real Salt Lake on May 5, which was later overturned … last season, the Revs set a club record for ejections with 10 in the 34-game season.
Losses and Shutouts Cut Deep
Saturday’s 1-0 loss at Philadelphia set two club records … it was the team’s 17th loss, which is the team’s most in the modern scoring era of MLS (since 2004; overall, the team’s most losses came in 1999 when the team went 12-20, which was during the shootout era of MLS) … on Saturday, the Revs were held scoreless for the 12th time on the year, also setting a club record for most times being shut out in a season.
The 1-0 finish in Philadelphia marked the club’s 15th one-goal loss this season … the loss was also the club’s seventh defeat this year in a 1-0 match … in 2012, the Revs are 2-15 in one-goal games as the team played its 17th one-goal game on Saturday, setting a club record for most one-goal games and one-goal losses in a season in the post-shootout era (2005-present).
Bengtson’s Bye Week
While the Revs are off this weekend, Jerry Bengtson will be busy with Honduras … Bengtson has been called up to represent Honduras in the team’s two upcoming FIFA World Cup Qualifier matches against Panama on Friday, Oct. 12, in Panama City, and Canada on Tuesday, Oct. 16 in San Pedro Sula, Honduras … the 25-year old departed for his national team after Saturday’s loss in Philadelphia … overall he has 24 caps and 10 goals for Honduras’ national team.
Fagundez Flies to Uruguay
Diego Fagundez also will be busy with a national team during the FIFA break … Fagundez has been called into training camp by Uruguay’s Under-20 National Team … the Revs’ 17-year old will join the squad that will train in Montevideo, Uruguay, from Sunday, Oct. 7 through Friday, Oct. 12 … Uruguay’s U20s will play a pair of friendlies – on Tuesday, Oct. 9, and Thursday, Oct. 11 – against Chile’s U20 squad during the camp.
Purdie Gets a Start
Rookie Alec Purdie made his first career start – and fifth career appearance – on Saturday at left midfield … Purdie later made his professional debut at right back – the position he’s played most frequently with the Revs’ reserve squad – when he shifted back following A.J. Soares’ injury … he played all 90 minutes in his first appearance since May 12 when he played five minutes as a substitute against Vancouver.
What Can’t That Guy Do?
The Revs’ go-to utility man, Ryan Guy, returned to action on Saturday after missing the Sept. 29 match at Houston while on international duty with Guam … Guy continued to demonstrate his versatility as he made his first-ever start at right back … later in the match, Guy played his sixth different position of the season when he shifted to center back in the 61st minute after A.J. Soares went off with a right knee injury … Guy has made 21 appearances – including 18 starts – this season for the Revs with time at right wing (four starts), left wing, forward (four starts), central midfield (nine starts), right back (one start) and center back.
Bobby Barrels Up Club Charts
Bobby Shuttleworth made his third consecutive start – and his fifth of the season – on Saturday at Philadelphia and in the process continued to climb up the club’s goalkeeper charts … Shuttleworth moved into seventh place on the club’s goalkeeper minutes played list with 1,581, passing Aidan Heaney who played 1,534 in 19 career appearances for the Revs.
Academy Teams Aiming for Oct. 13
The Revs’ Under-16 and Under-18 U.S. Soccer Development Academy squads will officially open their 2012-13 seasons this weekend on Saturday, Oct. 13 when the team travels to Albertson FC in Garden City, N.Y. … the teams’ original season opener – hosting Oakwood on Saturday, Sept. 22 – was re-scheduled for later in November … this is the first season of the new U.S. Soccer-mandated 10-month season.
Under-14s to Join Development Academy in 2013-14
Last month, U.S. Soccer announced that the Development Academy will add a U13/U14 division in the 2013-14 season … current Academy teams, as well as a select number of teams from outside the current Academy, will populate the U13/U14 roster when the league begins … this season, the Revs’ Under-14 squad will play in U.S. Club Soccer’s Northeast Pre-Academy League.
