The New England Revolution’s Jerry Bengtson scored the game’s only goal as Honduras defeated Spain, the overwhelming favorite to win gold in London, 1-0 this afternoon in Newcastle, England.
With his goal, Bengtson moved into a first-place tie for scoring and helped Honduras block Spain from advancing in the tournament.
The goal was Bengtson’s third of the tournament after he scored both of Honduras' goals in a 2-2 draw against Morocco on Thursday. He is now tied as the leading scorer in the tournament through two rounds of group play (with Senegal’s Mousaa Konate)
Honduras, which is 1-0-1 so far in the tournament, wraps up group play on Wednesday, August 1, against Japan at 12 p.m. ET.
