Postgame Quotes: Red Bulls 1, Revs 0

Revs vs. NYRB

NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION HEAD COACH JAY HEAPS

On the match:
We started poorly; weren’t good enough on certain situations. We attacked but we didn’t put a final ball in. We had a lot of chances but I felt we had a little flat start which was disappointing. In the second half, when we made a couple of tactical changes it certainly went our way in terms of possession, in terms of the game. You have to credit Ryan Meara, he made a couple of nice saves. He stood up big as a rookie.

On whether his team showed rust after a bye week:
We prepared for that so I hope that wasn’t it, but it was something, you could say whatever you want it was. It was bad, it was worse than rust to start. And then the second half you saw the game open up.

On the Henry injury:
Absolutely, yeah, he’s difficult. Sadly, he goes down. As a fan of the game, as a person who enjoys watching the game, it was difficult because he went right down and you hate when a guy goes right down away from the ball. I hope it’s a quick recovery for him.

NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION DEFENDER STEPHEN MCCARTHY

On playing against the two New York strikers:
Henry obviously is a legend. I looked up to him growing up, so you have to be mentally strong but it takes just one second for him, just like it did today, but I feel like we should have gotten something out of the game. Kenny Cooper, the same exact way, super strong and great with his feet. It’s tough but after the goal I think we had some good defense on both of them.

On the New York goal:
It was a long ball from the left. I had a good jump on it I thought, and Henry obviously is faster than I am. There might have been some tugging going on, but I have to be stronger. He got to the ball.

On whether the team started playing more confident after Henry came out:
I think maybe the goal might have been what really determined how much we were keeping the ball because I think it woke everyone up. We can’t keep giving the ball away. I don’t know if it was Henry leaving or the goal but we can’t start like that and we have to wake up earlier.

NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION MIDFIELDER BENNY FEILHABER

On his performance:
A little up and down, inconsistent. I think our team did well in the second half, we pressed, did everything we could to try to get that goal back. As for me, I’m still getting my fitness back and 45 minutes is going to do wonders for it. We have another game Wednesday and another one on Saturday, so I should be getting my legs again, getting 90 minutes again. In that respect it’s always good to get a lot of playing time. I’m just disappointed we didn’t get any points out of this game.

On his scoring chances:
The shot you really can’t do too much about. Just rip it at the goal, try to get it past the goalie; he made a good save, it was kind of right at him. The 1 v 1 obviously I could have done better. I heard the goalie saying ‘keep’, and he tricked me (laughs). I thought he was definitely coming out, I didn’t have a look, and I tried to head it past him, he stayed in his goal. I could have brought it down; I probably had five yards around in every direction. I definitely should have done better; I’ll probably have nightmares about that one tonight. I had the opportunity to get us a goal, I just couldn’t do it.

On whether he’ll be in the starting lineup on Wednesday vs. Colorado:
I always want to play. I think I have enough minutes to give. I don’t think I’m 90 minutes fit yet, but I can definitely give a good portion of the game and hopefully I’m there from the start. But we’ll see what Jay (Heaps) wants to do, I know he’s probably going to change things around since we have three games this week, but we’ll see what happens.
