FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution Reserves topped the Toronto FC Reserves, 2-1, this morning at the Upper Practice Field at Gillette Stadium. After a scoreless first half, the teams traded second-half goals before Zack Schilawski scored in stoppage time for New England to give the Revs the victory. It was the second straight game in which Toronto surrendered points in stoppage time.
In the first half, New England out-shot Toronto 6-1, but it was a non-shot that almost gave the Revs a third-minute goal. Zak Boggs’ cross from the right was mis-cleared by the Toronto defense, and the ball kicked off both the cross bar and the post before Reds academy keeper Angelo Cavaluzzo corralled it to prevent damage. After the early excitement, there were no clear scoring chances for either team the rest of the half.
As the second half got underway, New England’s Diego Fagundez had a chance from 27 yards in the 51st minute. He picked up an errant ball outside the penalty arc, and tried to chip Cavaluzzo, but his shot was narrowly high.
New England got on the board in the 67th minute with help from Toronto’s defense. Darrius Barnes, a halftime substitute, came up for a long throw-in into the area. His throw found the scrum at the near post, but Toronto defender Eddy Viator, who was challenging Schilawski in the air, headed the ball into his own net to give the Revs a one-goal advantage.
Toronto quickly countered, and leveled in the 74th minute. Revs defender Ryan Guy failed to clear the ball far enough out from the back, and his effort found Mikael Yourassawsky alone near the edge of the area. Yourassawsky fired a first-time volley back across the face of goal, and equalized past Bobby Shuttleworth who was helpless on the play.
The Revs had a chance to go ahead in the 85th minute when Schilawski sprung Fagundez in alone on Cavaluzzo, but the 16-year-old’s shot was deflected away by the keeper. Schilawski pounced on the loose ball, but his effort was went high.
Toronto twice had chances to score in the final minutes of the game, but was unable to covert either chance. In the 90th minute, Gianluca Zavarise placed a curling shot into the upper corner from the top of the area, but it found the corner of the goal and bounced back into play where the Revs safely cleared.
Schilawski’s go-ahead goal came in the next minute – the first of a four-minute stoppage period. Benny Feilhaber, who came in at halftime, controlled the ball in the midfield and sent Schilawski through with a defense-splitting pass. Schilawski ran onto the ball alone on Cavaluzzo, rounded the keeper and calmly placed the shot in goal for the 2-1 lead.
The lead was almost short-lived, however, as Toronto made one last effort to take away points from the game. Leandre Griffit had a shot to the near upper corner through traffic, but Shuttleworth made the win-preserving diving save to prevent the tying goal.
With the win, the Revolution Reserve improved to 4-3-1 (13 points) on the season, while Toronto fell to 0-4-2 (2 pts.). The Revolution also swept the two-game season series between the teams, following its 3-2 win in Toronto on June 21.
