FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution will begin play in the 2011 U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday, April 26, when the team will travel to face D.C. United at Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Maryland. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
The Revolution learned of its opponent this evening after United advanced to the next round of the play-in bracket behind a 4-2 win over the Philadelphia Union in penalty kicks. The teams were tied 1-1 after 90 minutes, and then 2-2 after extra time.
New England will travel to D.C. because the team lost a coin toss on Monday, Feb. 28, at the MLS offices in New York City. The winner of the New England-D.C. match will travel to face Sporting Kansas City for the right to join the formal U.S. Open Cup bracket.
The Revolution is the 2007 U.S. Open Cup champion, a title that was the club’s first-ever cup tournament title. New England defeated FC Dallas, 3-2, in Frisco, Texas, to win that match. The Revs have a 10-9-3 all-time record in U.S. Open Cup matches.
