FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The U.S. Soccer Federation today announced that the U.S. Men’s National Team will host defending FIFA World Cup Champion and number-one ranked Spain at Gillette Stadium on Saturday, June 4. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m. ET and the match will be televised live by ESPN and Univision. U.S. Soccer will announce ticket information in the near future.
The U.S. and Spain have met four times, with Spain holding a 3-1-0 edge. The USA’s lone victory – a 2-0 win – came in the semifinal round of the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup in South Africa, a win that snapped Spain’s 35-match unbeaten streak. This will be the teams’ first match on U.S. soil and will come three days before the U.S. begins play in the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
The match will be the U.S.’ 12th appearance at Gillette Stadium, where the Americans have posted a 9-1-2 record. Ten of those 12 matches have been either in the CONCACAF Gold Cup or have been FIFA World Cup qualifiers. The U.S. has posted eight shutouts at Gillette Stadium, and has out-scored its opponents, 28-6, at the facility.
The U.S. will host Argentina, currently ranked fourth in the world, on Saturday, March 26, at the new Meadowlands Arena in East Rutherford, N.J. Kickoff for that match is set for 7 p.m., and the match will be televised live on ESPN.
