FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – All-star goalkeeper Matt Reis has re-signed a new contract to play for the New England Revolution, the team announced today. Per MLS and team policies, terms of the deal were not released.
Reis, who has played more games in goal (188) – and started more games in goal (187) – than any other Revolution goalkeeper, holds nearly every career club goalkeeping record, including goals against average (1.29), wins (75), saves (757), shutouts (50) and saves percentage (.729).
“We are very pleased Matt has decided to remain with the Revs,” Revolution Vice President of Player Personnel Michael Burns said. “Not only has he been one of the league’s top goalkeepers, but he’s been a tremendous leader for us both on and off the field. We're looking forward to him continuing his stellar career in New England and anchoring our team.”
The 2009 season was Reis’ top statistical season in his career, during which he posted an 0.96 goals against average in 24 appearances. In 2010, he was limited to 14 appearances as he underwent surgeries to bookend his season: shoulder and knee surgeries in preseason that held him from action until mid-June, and a season-ending ankle procedure in mid-October.

Entering the 2011 season, Reis ranks among the top 10 in several MLS career goalkeeping categories, including games played (seventh - 227), games started (seventh - 222), minutes played (seventh – 20,081), wins (tied for seventh - 92), saves (seventh - 882) and shutouts (seventh - 59).
“I’m excited to extend my career in New England,” Reis said. “Everything has been great during my time with the team. I’m looking forward to having a healthy 2011 and challenging for an MLS Cup for our deserving fans in New England.”
Reis, 35, is a former member of the U.S. National Team and earned two caps, going 2-0-0 with one shutout. He made his first international appearance for the USMNT on Jan. 22, 2006, and posted a shutout in the team’s 1-0 victory over Canada. He made his second appearance in the team’s 3-1 victory over Denmark on Jan. 20, 2007. Reis was also an alternate to the U.S.’s 2006 FIFA World Cup Squad.
Reis, who became the Revs’ starting goalkeeper midway through the 2004 season, was originally drafted by his hometown LA Galaxy in the third round (26th overall) in the 1998 MLS College Draft. He played five seasons in Los Angeles before being traded to New England on Jan. 17, 2003, in exchange for all-star Alex Pineda Chacon.
