Revolution claims two in Re-Entry Draft

The Revolution claimed Ryan Cochrane (D) and Fred (M) in the 2010 Re-Entry Draft

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution selected the rights to two players – defender Ryan Cochrane and midfielder/forward Fred – in today’s second stage of the 2010 Re-Entry Draft. The Revolution, which picked fourth in the draft, now has seven days to tender a contract offer to the players. The Revolution was one of two teams to make two selections in today’s draft, joining the LA Galaxy.

Cochrane was made available in the draft after the Houston Dynamo declined to exercise his contract option for 2011, while Fred is out-of-contract for the 2011 season.

“The Re-Entry Process is new for everyone this year,” Revolution Vice President of Player Personnel Michael Burns said. “As of now, we have the rights to both players, and we now have to see if we can work out contracts with them. If we are able to do so, we believe we’ll have added two strong, experienced players to our roster who can help us immediately.”

Cochrane, 27, entered Major League Soccer in 2004 and has played his entire seven-year career with the San Jose Earthquakes and Houston Dynamo. Mainly a central defender, he won two MLS Cups with the Dynamo in 2006 and 2007. Overall, he has made 123 career regular-season appearances, scoring four goals and adding four assists. As a central figure in the 2007 Houston defense, Cochrane helped the Dynamo set a then-record for team defense with just 23 goals allowed in the 30-game season.

The Portland, Ore., born defender began his career with the San Jose Earthquakes in 2004 after a collegiate career at nearby Santa Clara University. Cochrane stayed with the team when it was relocated to Houston in 2006, and then was selected by the then-expansion San Jose Earthquakes in the 2007 Expansion Draft. He played the 2008 season and part of the 2009 season in the Bay Area, before being traded back to the Dynamo on Aug. 14, 2009.

Fred, 31, entered Major League Soccer in 2007 when he was signed by D.C. United. A native of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Fred was traded to the Philadelphia Union in a trade ahead of the 2010 SuperDraft, and spent the 2010 season in Philly where he made 25 appearances (24 starts) and scored four goals and added one assist. Overall, he has 97 career regular-season MLS appearances with 15 goals and 17 assists between the two clubs.

Fred came to MLS from Melbourne Victory FC in the Australian A-League, helping the club to a league-best 14-3-4 record and a league championship while scoring four goals and adding nine assists in 2006. Before playing for Melbourne, Fred played 10 seasons for Brazil’s America-MG where he scored 20 goals in 80 appearances, and with Guarani Minas Gerais, his hometown team.
