Revolution Academy Update: May 25, 2010

WALTHAM, Mass. – Coming on the heels of the Under-16s making the playoffs two weekends ago, the Under-18s followed suit with a 1-1 draw with the FC Greater Boston Bolts last Wednesday night in Waltham on the campus of Brandeis University to also qualify for the U.S. Soccer Development Academy playoffs. The U16s pre-empted the elders’ celebration with a 4-2 victory over the Bolts, and now both teams prep for a Memorial Day Weekend trip to Sarasota, Fla. for a USSDA showcase event.

The U16s jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first half thanks to Diego Fagundez (Leominster, Mass.), who scored both goals. Cole Denormandie (Lincoln, Mass.) then scored in the 68th minute to put the U16s ahead by a score of 3-0 before FC Greater Boston mounted a serious comeback attempt with a pair of goals by Mac Steeves in the 73rd and 78th minutes, but Dominik Machado (Attleboro, Mass.) removed all doubt for the U16s by tallying in the 79th minute to seal the 4-2 victory.

The U18s went into Wednesday’s match fighting for a berth in the playoffs, needing at least a tie with the FC Greater Boston Bolts to secure a postseason berth. After going down 1-0 in the 40th minute on a score from Leon Brown, Jr., the U18s came out to play an inspired second half, determined to battle back against local rival FC Greater Boston. Finally, with time winding down in the 80th minute, Michael Rincon (Malden, Mass.) set up Chris Tsonsis for the game-tying goal. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, which was enough to qualify the U18s for the playoffs.

Assured spots in the second season, the youth clubs will now travel to Sarasota, Fla. this weekend for a showcase event that includes Christian Sady (North Andover, Mass.) and Mitch Taintor (Storrs, Conn.), who were recently named to the Under-16 All-Academy Team, and will play on U.S. Soccer Development Academy’s select teams this weekend. Both clubs will play three games over the holiday weekend before closing out their regular seasons on June 5 and 6.
