Revolution Academy Update: May 18, 2010

SYRACUSE, N.Y. & EPPING, N.H. – The New England Revolution youth teams won three out of four games this weekend as they traveled first to Syracuse, N.Y. to face Empire United and then to Epping, N.H. to play Seacoast United. The Under-16s defeated Empire United, 4-1, while the Under-18s dropped a tough, 1-0 decision to Empire later in the day. Sunday was a clean sweep for the youth clubs, with both teams walking away with 2-1 victories over Seacoast United out of New Hampshire. The weekend sweep by the U16s kept them in first place and assured the club a spot in the postseason.

The U16 Revs jumped out to an early lead with a goal in the 8th minute by Devin Devoy (North Attleboro, Mass.), assisted by Diego Fagundez (Leominster, Mass.). In the 37th minute, Christian Sady (North Andover, Mass.) set up Felix DeBona (Everett, Mass.) for the U16’s second goal of the half. The U16s then added two more goals in the second half, by Fagundez in the 62nd minute and Dominik Machado (Attleboro, Mass.) in the 79th minute, to ensure a 4-1 victory.

The U18s played a tough game against Empire United, one that was tied 0-0 for the majority of the match. The deadlock was broken in the 70th minute when Empire United’s Stephen Baker scored, giving Empire a 1-0 lead. The U18s tried to tie the game again, but couldn’t find the net and the game ended with a 1-0 loss.

On Sunday, Felix DeBona (Everett, Mass.) scored twice, in the 1st minute and again in the 19th minute, to give the U16s a 2-0 lead at right off the bat. Seacoast United’s Kevin DeSa scored on a penalty kick in the 58th minute, but the U16s held on to win the match by a score of 2-1.

The U18s were down 1-0 early in the second half thanks to a goal by Seacoast United’s Samual White when Josh Vlasich (East Kingston, N.H.) set up Cody Osgood (Harvard, Mass.) for a goal in the 54th minute to tie the score at one. Jonni Ventura (Westminster, Mass.) then scored the game winning goal in the 78th minute to give the U18s a 2-1 victory.
The U16 and U18 youth teams take to the road again this week with matches against the Greater Boston Bolts on Wednesday, May 19 and Brandeis University in Wellesley, Mass. at 6 and 8 p.m. The U18s can qualify for a playoff spot with a win this week, and then can rest up for the weekend, followed by a full slate of matches for Memorial Day Weekend.
