Revolution Youth Update: April 22, 2010

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution youth teams picked up two wins, one loss and a tie last weekend against Seacoast United and Empire United in the first games of the season at Gillette Stadium. The U16s won both games on the weekend while the U18s tied Seacoast on Saturday and lost to Empire on Sunday.

The Under-16s jumped out to a 2-0 halftime lead and cruised to a 5-2 victory over Seacoast United at Gillette Stadium on Saturday. Three different players scored goals for the Revs, including Diego Fagundez (Leominster, Mass.), who led the way for the U16s with two goals and one assist, while Felix DeBona (Everett, Mass.) tallied twice. Christian Sady (North Andover, Mass.) assisted on two goals while Adrian Reifsnyder (Newton, Mass.) helped on the fifth Revs goal by Salvador Castro (Lynn, Mass.).

The Under-18s jumped out in front, 2-0 within the first 21 minutes of play on Saturday, but failed to keep Seacoast United at bay and settled for a 2-2 draw. Jonni Ventura (Westminster, Mass.) scored both goals for New England with Cody Osgood (Harvard, Mass.) assisting on the first. Early on, Osgood fed Ventura for the goal in the fourth minute and Ventura put the Revs ahead by two in the 21st minute. The U18s were looking to take a 2-0 lead into halftime, but Sam White scored in the 38th minute to give Seacoast momentum heading into the break. Kyle Lucas then tallied for Seacoast in the 70th minute to pull even with the Revs and earn the draw.

The U16s returned to action on Sunday to face Empire United and played a close match, tallying late in the game to seal the victory and sweep the weekend. Cole Denormandie (Lincoln, Mass.) fed Daniel Tchen (Concord, Mass.) to go ahead 1-0 in the 28th minute. The Revs had the game in hand until Empire’s Alex Swanger knotted the score at 1-1 in the 67th minute. But, with time winding down, and the match seemingly headed for a draw, Fagundez struck in the 76th minute to seal the 2-1 victory. Two wins put the U16s at 7-5-4 on the season, good for third place in the Northeast Division of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy.

The U18s continued their midseason struggles with a 3-1 loss to Empire United on Sunday afternoon. The Revs went ahead early when Miguel Castro (Lynn, Mass.) assisted Jonni Ventura’s third goal of the weekend and first of the game. That would be the only bright spot for the U18s, though, because Empire answered with three straight goals to earn a come-from-behind win. Matt Campana scored twice for Empire and Tim Crawford tallied to cap the scoring. The U18s dropped to 7-8-1 on the season and sit in second place in the Northeast Division.

The youth Revs will next face FC Greater Boston on Saturday at Gillette Stadium, the only game for the U16s and U18s this weekend. FC Greater Boston sits one place ahead of both teams in their respective divisions.
