Postgame Quotes: Earthquakes 2, Revs 0

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES HEAD COACH FRANK YALLOP

On the game:
“This was probably one of the better performances since I’ve been back. I thought the play was very solid, very dynamic going forward, I thought our passing was clean.”

On the defensive communication:
“We have worked on shape in training, but when you get out on the field, you have to sort it out for yourself. Between Jason (Hernandez) and Ike (Opara), they are good talkers. Ike’s a young man, but he does communicate. It worked at Wake (Forest), which has a similar system as ours, and he understands it. Jason has become a leader back there as well.”

On Chris Wondolowski’s play:
“Chris played great. It is great for him to score a goal and I thought he played excellent tonight. He has done really well and I am very happy with him.”

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES DEFENDER IKE OPARA

On his second career goal:
“I think Bobby Convey and I can make a living off of that kind of play. I am really excited, its nice to kill the game off and I think it was big for us because New England is a good team, and they were going to just keep coming at us.”

On building momentum:
“We just want to keep it rolling, and build off of this type of performance. I think these last two weekends have shown our fight out there and we do have the talent, I think that the sky is the limit for this team.”

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES GOALKEEPER JOE CANNON

On the team’s performance:
“I think the most important part about tonight was seeing the team work extremely hard together and I think the team did that in front of me. I am proud of the effort, not only in this game, but really all week. We had a tough one mid-week with Salt Lake, but we earned this win tonight.”

On looking forward to next week:
“Momentum is really a funny thing, this kind of performance provides a lot of confidence. I feel that it is important because New England is a good side, and we are a good side. I am just happy to be a part of this.”

REVOLUTION MIDFIELDER CHRIS TIERNEY

On loss:
“We got off to a slow; I thought we were lucky going into the half nil-nil. I thought it was a questionable build-up to their first [goal], poor marking on the second. I don’t think we deserved 3 points tonight. It was a fair bill”.

On Earthquakes first goal:
“I think this game was one where the first goal was going to decide it. We had a couple of good chances, but couldn’t put one away. I think if we had [made] one, we would be sitting in a totally different position right now.”

NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION DEFENDER DARRIUS BARNES

Thoughts on Game:
“It was just one of those nights where we never found our game. We didn’t get the ball moving, we didn’t find the chemistry tonight. We couldn’t link up passes; it was a frustrating night overall. We had a few chances that we could have stolen. We got ahead early, but we couldn’t take advantage of those. Then they came back and got their own goal and that was the difference in the game”.

On first half:
“We knew we didn’t play our best, so going into halftime nil-nil was a plus for us. We definitely felt we could have been down one at halftime. But to be tied nil-nil we felt good about that because we knew we haven’t played our best soccer. We came out in the second half a little stronger, but it still isn’t no where close to what we need to be doing to be successful”.

NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION HEAD COACH STEVE NICOL

Thoughts on Revs overall performance:
“I didn’t think we were particularly good tonight. I don’t think there is any denying that. Sadly, I think the goals that went against us shouldn’t have happened. I think the first goal was off sides, and that obviously changes the game. Like I said, we didn’t play well.”

Thoughts by half time:
“We defended well. I think Preston had one save to make. He had a good save off of a header. We were probably happier than Frank [Yallop] was at halftime, that’s for sure.”
