FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - New England Revolution forward Kenny Mansally was voted Major League Soccer’s player of the week following his two-goal performance in the Revolution’s 2-0 victory on the road at D.C. United on Saturday, April 3. The Major League Soccer player of the week is selected each week by a panel of journalists from the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR).
Mansally’s two-goal performance was the first multiple-goal game of his career. After coming on as a substitute in the 68th minute with the score knotted at 0-0, Mansally wasted little time in making an impact. In the 80th minute, he charged into the penalty area and got on the end of Chris Tierney’s deflected cross and punched it past United keeper Troy Perkins.
Two minutes later, Mansally had a spectacular individual effort to give the Revolution its final two-goal margin. The Gambia international received the ball at the top corner of the penalty area and deked out a pair of United defenders before launching a shot into the far upper corner of the goal, past a diving Perkins.
This is Mansally’s first-ever player of the week award, and the team’s first of the 2010 season.
The Revolution (1-1-0, 3 pts.) opens its home schedule this weekend when the team hosts Toronto FC in its 2010 home opener on Saturday, April 10. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m., and Comcast SportsNet will broadcast the game live on a secondary channel. Check your TV listings for more information.
