Report: Brazilian side to face Revs

The trip by Brazilian club Santos for the Red Bull Arena opener seems to have left an impression back home.

A report released late last week out of Brazil says that Cruzeiro have confirmed they will participate in a U.S. tour in June, and that the New England Revolution will take part with an international exhibition.

Zero Hora cites Cruzeiro’s international soccer director, Valdir Barbosa, who confirms the club will play at least two matches in the U.S.

“Promoters are on their way to Belo Horizonte on Monday [yesterday] to sign the contracts,” Barbosa said on Rádio Itatiaia.

According to the report, Cruzeiro’s tour would start with a June 10 match against the Haitian National Team in Miami. On June 13, Cruzeiro would face the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium, and a potential exhibition match in New Jersey is mentioned as a possibility.

Cruzerio are currently involved in the Copa Libertadores group phase.

Late Monday night Frank Dell’Apa of the Boston Globe cited a source familiar with the negotiations, who confirmed the June 13 date at Gillette Stadium. The match would fall during the two-week break in MLS league action for the World Cup.

The Revolution and Red Bulls were not available for comment.

A reserve Santos squad fielding superstar Neymar drew a large local Brazilian contingent for the sold out opener of Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J. The New York Red Bulls won the match 3-1.
