FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – New England Revolution Head Coach Steve Nicol announced that the club has hired Remi Roy as the team’s goalkeepers coach.
Roy replaces Gwynne Williams, who accepted the Director of Coaching position with the Alabama state Olympic Development Program in February after three seasons with the Revolution.
“We’re pleased to bring Remi onto our staff full-time,” Nicol said. “He’s well-regarded in the coaching community, and has had a lot of success working with and developing goalkeepers. Remi has a lot of energy and passion for coaching, and we believe he’ll be a great addition to our staff.”
[inline_node:22303]Roy joins the Revolution after 10 years as the assistant coach/goalkeepers coach for both the men’s and women’s soccer teams at the University of Mobile (Ala.), his alma mater. During his tenure in Mobile, Roy has also been a member of the Region III goalkeeping staff since 2003, and head coach for the Port City Futbol Club, where he also served as the academy’s director. Additionally, Roy served as the Puerto Rico National Team’s goalkeeper coach in its preparations for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
A native of New Brunswick, Canada, Roy played collegiately at the University of Mobile from 1997-99. In his final season in 1999, Roy garnered all-conference, all-region and All-America honors. In addition to his various coaching positions, Roy simultaneously spent five years as a player-coach in the United Soccer League (USL) with the Syracuse Salty Dogs (2003) and the Virginia Beach Mariners (2004-07).
Roy holds a USSF “A” License and Level I and II NSCAA Goalkeeping Licenses.
The Revolution will open the 2010 season on the road against the LA Galaxy on Saturday, March 27 at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., before traveling to rival D.C. United on Saturday, April 3. The Revs are set to open their 2010 home slate on Saturday, April 10, when they host Toronto FC.
