Recap | Revs battle to 2-2 draw with MNUFC to open Portland preseason tournament

Brandon Bye vs. Minnesota United FC (2020 preseason)

PORTLAND, Ore. – The New England Revolution began play in the Portland Timbers’ preseason tournament with a 2-2 draw against Minnesota United FC at Providence Park on Sunday. Revolution forward Adam Buksa scored New England’s opening goal, his first with the club, while Gustavo Bou tallied his second preseason goal.

Minnesota got on the board first in the 23rd minute with a close-range finish by Luis Amarilla, assisted by Kevin Molino. Buksa answered with a strike in the 28th minute, combining with Teal Bunbury to deliver a first-time finish from the top of the box. The Loons pulled ahead again in the 35th minute with a penalty kick converted by Amarilla. Goalkeeper Matt Turner, who played the full 90 minutes in net, came through with a crucial stop in the 41st minute to keep the score at 2-1 heading into halftime.

The Revolution found the equalizer in the second half as Bou tallied his second goal of the preseason. The Argentine striker collected an errant Minnesota back-pass and coolly finished past Loons goalkeeper Tyler Miller to knot the game at 2-2. The goal was one of several quality chances for Bou in the second half, including a 55th-minute shot saved from close range. Buksa, Bou, Brandon Bye, Cristian Penilla, Andrew Farrell, and Turner all played the full 90 minutes for their longest preseason run-outs to date.

The Revolution will return to action in the four-team preseason tournament on Wednesday, Feb. 19 against Vancouver Whitecaps FC at 8:00 p.m. ET, before concluding the preseason against the host Portland Timbers on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 8:00 p.m. ET. Both matches will be streamed for local audiences on Revolutionsoccer.net. Following Saturday’s preseason finale, the Revolution will return to Foxborough to prepare for the club’s 2020 regular season opener on Saturday, Feb. 29 against the Montreal Impact at Olympic Stadium (3:00 p.m. ET).
