NEW ENGLAND VS. LOS ANGELES SERIES INFORMATION
- Saturday night’s match will be the 31st all-time, regular-season meeting between the Revolution and Galaxy … with a win in the season’s previous meeting on July 4, LA took the lead in the series, 13-12-5.
- The Revolution’s loss to the Galaxy on July 4 was the club’s first setback in the regular-season series since April 3, 2004 … prior to the loss, New England had gone 6-0-3 in its previous nine regular-season meetings with LA.
- Saturday night’s match will conclude the 2009 regular-season series between the Revs and Galaxy … LA earned a 1-0 win behind the strength of Alecko Eskandarian’s eighth-minute goal on July 4 at The Home Depot Center.
- With a win or a draw on Saturday night, the Galaxy can win the season series with the Revolution for the first time since 1999 … LA won the first four season series (1996-1999) between the two clubs, but the last nine series have either been won by the Revs or finished tied.
- The Revolution has not lost a home game to the Galaxy since July 11, 1999 … New England is 7-0-2 in its last nine regular-season home games against the Galaxy.
- New England has never lost a regular-season game to LA at Gillette Stadium, going an undefeated 5-0-2 in seven games against the Galaxy since the facility opened in 2002 … overall, the Revs are 8-4-2 at home against the Galaxy.
- Although the Revs have never lost a regular-season game to the Galaxy at Gillette Stadium, they were defeated by LA in the 2002 MLS Cup title game at the facility.
- New England and LA have met in the MLS Cup Playoffs twice – both the 2002 and 2005 MLS Cup Final … the Galaxy won both meetings in overtime, 1-0 … the 2002 meeting was in Foxborough, while the 2005 match was at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas.
- The Revs and Galaxy have played one U.S. Open Cup match – the 2001 championship game in Fullerton, Calif. … LA won that game, 2-1, in overtime.
PLAYER NOTES VS. LOS ANGELES
- Taylor Twellman leads the Revs with eight career goals against LA, while he’s also added three assists in 15 appearances … he will be unavailable for Saturday night’s match, however, as he is currently on the disabled list with a concussion, which he suffered in the teams’ meeting at Gillette Stadium on Aug. 30, 2008.
- Shalrie Joseph has recorded four goals and two assists in 13 career appearances against the Galaxy, marking his best offensive output against any team … Joseph scored the game-tying goal in the 2-2 draw with LA the last time the two teams met at Gillette Stadium on Aug. 30, 2008.
- Edgaras Jankauskas made his MLS debut against the Galaxy in the season’s previous meeting on July 4.
- Gabriel Badilla made his MLS debut against the Galaxy on Aug. 30, 2008.
- Matt Reis – who made 39 appearances for the Galaxy from 1998-2002 – is 5-1-3 in nine regular-season matches against his former club … he has recorded three shutouts while maintaining a 0.89 goals against average.
LAST MEETING
Los Angeles 1, New England 0
July 4, 2009 – The Home Depot Center (Carson, Calif.)
Making his debut for his new club just three days after being acquired via trade, Alecko Eskandarian scored the only goal of the game in the eighth minute as the Galaxy earned its first regular-season win over the Revolution since 2004 … midfielder Wells Thompson – a right-footed player – played left back for the injury-hit Revs after Chris Tierney suffered a sprained knee in training the day before the game … Eskandarian scored the game-winner just eight minutes in, finishing Todd Dunivant’s lofted cross with a full volley from the penalty spot … New England’s best chance to score came in the 73rd minute when Mike Videira’s header was put on frame, but LA goalkeeper Josh Saunders dove to his right to preserve the shutout.
NEWS & NOTES
REVS EXTEND UNBEATEN STREAK TO FOUR GAMES …
Edgaras Jankauskas’ late goal not only earned the Revolution an important 1-1 draw with Eastern Conference for Toronto FC last Saturday night, but it also extended the club’s unbeaten run in league action to four games (2-0-2) … the Revs have maintained the streak with a combination of stingy defense and timely goal-scoring, as they have outscored their opponents, 4-1, during the current four-game stretch … coincidentally, the Revolution was last defeated by the LA Galaxy, 1-0, on July 4 at The Home Depot Center … the Revs have since defeated both Chivas USA (July 19) and Houston (July 25), while they played to draws with Kansas City (July 11) and Toronto (Aug. 1) … meanwhile, the Galaxy is unbeaten in its last five league games and hasn’t lost an MLS match since June 20.
… WHILE THEIR HOME UNBEATEN RUN REACHES SIX
Not only did last Saturday night’s 1-1 draw with Toronto FC extend the Revolution’s unbeaten streak to four games, but it also lengthened the club’s home undefeated run to six games (3-0-3) … the Revs have lost just one league game at Gillette Stadium this season, a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the Houston Dynamo on May 3 … since then, New England has defeated D.C. (May 30), New York (June 7) and Chivas USA (July 19), while the club has drawn with Colorado (May 16), Kansas City (July 11) and Toronto (Aug. 1) … the Revs’ current run is the third-longest active home unbeaten streak in the league, behind only Columbus (10) and D.C. (9), which are both undefeated at home in 2009 … this is the seventh time in club history that the Revolution has gone undefeated for as many as six consecutive home games, while the longest home unbeaten run in Revolution history was 12 games, from Sept. 18, 2004 – July 27, 2005.
SHUTOUT STREAK SNAPPED, BUT NOT BEFORE REACHING CLUB RECORD 386 MINUTES
Toronto FC’s Dwayne De Rosario finally broke the Revolution’s defensive resolve in the 34th minute of last Saturday night’s 1-1 draw at Gillette Stadium, but New England had already established a new club record with 386 consecutive shutout minutes … the new mark broke the old record by just two minutes (384 minutes from April 23 – May 21, 2005) … De Rosario’s goal was the first conceded by the Revolution since the eighth minute of the 1-0 loss to the LA Galaxy on July 4, as the club shut out Kansas City (July 11), Chivas USA (July 19) and Houston (July 25) in the three following games … goalkeeper Matt Reis was in goal for all 386 minutes of the streak, which was the fourth-longest such streak in MLS this season.
THE GALAXY IS ALWAYS A WELCOME VISITOR IN FOXBOROUGH
The Revolution has had its fair share of success against many teams at Gillette Stadium, but none more so than the LA Galaxy … perhaps it has something to do with the draining cross-country flight, but for whatever reason, the Galaxy has not fared well in Foxborough in recent years … since Gillette Stadium opened in 2002, the Revs have hosted the Galaxy seven times in the MLS regular season and have gone an undefeated 5-0-2 … in fact, the Revolution has not lost a home game to the Galaxy since July 11, 1999, at the old Foxboro Stadium, going 7-0-2 in its last nine regular-season home games against LA … overall, New England is 8-4-2 at home against the Galaxy.
REVOLUTION AIMING TO EVEN THE SCORE WITH THE GALAXY
The all-time, regular-season series between the Revolution and Galaxy has been remarkably even, so much so that the clubs entered their first meeting of the season on July 4 with identical 12-12-5 records against each other … LA won that match, 1-0, and subsequently took the lead in the all-time series by a mere one game … with the Galaxy coming to town this weekend, the Revs will be looking to even the score and once again knot the all-time series at 13 wins apiece.
NICOL SUSPENDED FOR GALAXY GAME
Revolution head coach Steve Nicol will be suspended for Saturday night’s match against the LA Galaxy after he was ejected from New England’s last game, a 1-1 draw with Toronto FC … in his place, assistant coach Paul Mariner will serve as the No. 1 on New England’s bench on Saturday night … Nicol was sent to the Revolution locker room in the 90th minute against TFC, just as the game entered stoppage time … as a result, Nicol will not be allowed on the field for this weekend’s showdown with the Galaxy, although he will be permitted to speak to his team in the locker room both pregame and at halftime … Nicol was last ejected from a game on Sept. 9, 2007, a 4-2 loss to D.C. United, and was suspended for the Revolution’s 4-2 win against FC Dallas on Sept. 15, 2007.
REVS CONTINUE TO LEAVE IT LATE …
A familiar story unfolded last Saturday night at Gillette Stadium, as Edgaras Jankauskas scored a 76th-minute goal to lift the Revolution to a 1-1 draw with Toronto FC … the Revs have made a habit of scoring the vast majority of their goals in the second half this season, as 15 of their 19 regular-season goals have been scored after the halftime break … adding to the intrigue, one of the Revolution’s four first-half goals was actually scored in first-half stoppage time, after the opening 45 minutes … New England has scored 79 percent of its goals in the second half, far and away the greatest percentage of second-half goals scored by any team in the league … Real Salt Lake has scored 20 of its 28 total goals in the second half (71 percent), representing the Revolution’s closest competition in the category.
… REALLY, REALLY LATE
Not only have the Revs scored a majority of their goals in the second half this season, but they’ve displayed a penchant for the dramatic with crucial goals in the game’s latest stages … just 17 games into the 2009 season, the Revolution has already scored five game-winning or game-tying goals after the 75th minute, a figure increased by Edgaras Jankauskas’ 76th-minute strike in last Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Toronto … three of the late goals have been game-winners, while two have been game-tying strikes … by comparison, the Revs scored just three combined game-winning and game-tying goals after the 75th minute in the entire 2008 season … in eight regular-season home games in 2009, New England has scored a game-winning or game-tying goal after the 75th minute three times, providing a reason for every fan to stick around until the final whistle.
JOSEPH SETS NEW CAREER HIGH WITH SIXTH ASSIST
Known more in the past as a bruising defensive midfielder and occasional goal-scorer, Shalrie Joseph can now add playmaker to the variety of superlatives used to describe his game, as the seven-year veteran established a new career high with his sixth assist in the 1-1 draw with Toronto last weekend … Jay Heaps began the play with a lofted ball into the box, where Joseph rose above his defender and nodded the ball down for Edgaras Jankauskas, who slid to place a shot inside the right post … Joseph had previously recorded five assists in a season twice – in both 2005 and 2007 … the Grenadian has spent much of 2009 out of position as a forward, and has responded with an increased offensive production … he has also scored five goals this season, just one shy of matching his career high in that category, as well.
JANKAUSKAS NETS FIRST MLS GOAL IN FIRST MLS START
Returning from injury to make his first start in an MLS regular-season game, Edgaras Jankauskas scored his first MLS goal to help the Revolution earn a 1-1 draw with Toronto last Saturday night … the Lithuanian forward scored in the 76th minute, finishing from close range after being set up by Shalrie Joseph and Jay Heaps … Jankauskas had made two previous substitute appearances in league action without scoring, while he’d scored one goal in his only previous start against the Chicago Fire in the SuperLiga 2009 semifinal … after suffering a right hamstring strain in the SuperLiga match against Chicago, Jankauskas missed two games (July 19 vs. Chivas USA, July 25 at Houston) but returned to the lineup in style against Toronto.
