New England Revolution Head Coach Steve Nicol
On coming back from two goals …
“We’ve got plenty of heart and passion for the game, I think you saw that tonight. The equalizer’s just a product of the conditions tonight, it’s slippery. The ball skates of (Emmanuel) Osei’s head, ricochets of his head and finishes it well. We end up scoring another one and then you’re asking questions of your team and what they’re made of. Certainly didn’t play any silky soccer tonight, but we played enough decent football that we made some chances and scored four goals, so can’t complain about it now. We’re disappointed that (Kevin) Alston and (Steve) Ralston had to come off with tight hamstrings which are obviously not good; it obviously gives us a huge problem in the next few weeks.”
On Kheli Dube scoring …
“It’s always huge. If your center forward scores a goal, then he’s happy and makes him confident for the next game, and he probably sleeps well tonight.”
On the physical nature of the end of the game …
“I think most people saw what happened other than the four people that should have ....”
On how the game got physical at the end …
“I can only go on the conduct of our players, and I thought the conduct of our players was exemplary. Certainly the people who run this tournament, I’m pretty certain and I certainly hope, they’ll look at the evidence on tape. I think it’s pretty conclusive, and they’ll act appropriately.”
New England Revolution Midfielder Kenny Mansally
On being able to come from two goals behind without the team’s leading scorers…
“I think we worked as a team. We are the defending champions of SuperLiga, so even though we were two down, we came back to get the results. So I think we worked as a team to get the results.”
On what it was like to be back out there with Kheli Dube…
“It felt really good because we both know each other. Three or four of us live together so we have been talking about it. So we came out and just did what we normally used to do. I think right now we just have to focus on Wednesday’s game.”
On how well they passed the ball in the weather condition…
“I think pretty good. We were practicing keeping the ball. Stevie (Nicol) was telling us to keep the ball. The Mexican teams can keep the ball so we just had to keep the ball physically.”
New England Revolution Forward Kheli Dube
On how it felt for him to be in a position to help his team come back from behind…
“I feel like we wanted to win more. We just kept going and pushing each other. I think we played the best we could today. We tried to pass the ball. As soon as you pass the ball you get chances so I think we did the best we could there.”
On the game getting physical in the end…
“You always expect that from these kind of teams. We experienced the same things last year so we knew what was going to go on. We just had to go in and be smart about it.”
On the team’s great energy in the second half…
“I think it was a good comeback. When everybody is down, you’re motivated to try to get a win out of it. It helped today because we motivated each other and got a win out of it.”
Santos Laguna Technical Director Sergio Bueno
On the team’s frustration at the end of the game …
“I think it was a combination of factors. Certainly, this is a team that doesn’t like to lose which was certainly part of it. Also there was a player on our team that was injured and that unsettled our players a little bit. Still, as players there are certain emotions you have to control. What we are most disappointed in is the result because it’s going to make it a challenge to advance to the next round, which is what we came here to do.”
On the Revs playing many reserves (because of injuries) and getting a result …
“Really the lineup didn’t surprise us much. Number 11 (Kheli Dube) was the only player who hadn’t played the last couple games in the regular season that we saw, so it was more or less the team that we expected. However, they are a very good team. They’re well organized and they use their size to their advantage. The thing that they’re very good at is using the flanks. We have to congratulate them because they played a really good game.”
On if the weather (rain, wind, raw temperatures) affected his team …
“Yes, it was a little bit of a disadvantage for us. With it being wet, the field was very fast. It took us a few minutes at the beginning to get used to that, but once we did, I feel like we controlled the ball pretty well, and we adjusted to the conditions. But we have to say in the end that the other team did better with the conditions than we did.”
