Revs return to action on Friday night when they visit D.C. United at RFK Stadium for ESPN2’s MLS Game of the Week

NEW ENGLAND VS. D.C. SERIES INFORMATION

  • D.C. leads the all-time, regular-season series between the two clubs, 25-18-7 … the Revs are just 6-16-3 all-time on the road against United, while they’re 12-9-4 against D.C. in Foxborough.
  • Friday night’s match will be the first of two meetings between New England and D.C. in the 2009 regular season … the series will conclude on May 30, when the Revs host United at Gillette Stadium.
  • The Revolution and United split three meetings in the 2008 regular-season series, 1-1-1 … the teams played to a 2-2 draw at Gillette Stadium on May 29, while the Revs earned a 2-1 win at Gillette Stadium on Aug. 20 and D.C. took a 2-1 victory at RFK Stadium on Oct. 16.
  • In addition to their three regular-season showdowns in 2008, New England and D.C. also met in the semifinals of the U.S. Open Cup on Aug. 12 … United won the match at RFK Stadium, 3-1, en route to winning the competition.
  • New England is 0-2-1 in its last three regular-season visits to RFK Stadium … the Revs haven’t won a regular-season game in D.C. since Oct. 7, 2006 – a 2-1 victory … however, the Revolution did win the Eastern Conference Championship at RFK Stadium later that season with a 1-0 win on Nov. 5, 2006.
  • The regular-season series has been remarkably even in recent years, as the clubs are 5-5-4 against each other in 14 meetings since the start of the 2005 season … including outside competitions, the teams are 6-6-4 in the last 16 overall meetings.
  • Friday night’s match will be the 51st regular-season meeting between the Revs and United, which represents the Revolution’s greatest total of matches against any opponent … it will also be the 57th overall meeting between the clubs, which have played four MLS Cup Playoff matches and two U.S. Open Cup contests.
  • The teams have met in three postseason series, with D.C. owning a 2-1-1 edge in those matches … however, the Revs defeated United, 1-0, in the most recent playoff meeting on Nov. 5, 2006, to win the Eastern Conference Championship at RFK Stadium and earn a berth in MLS Cup.

PLAYER NOTES VS. D.C.

D.C. 2, New England 1
October 16, 2008 – RFK Stadium (Washington, D.C.)

Francis Doe scored both D.C. goals as United came from behind to earn a 2-1 victory over the Revs … Taylor Twellman gave New England the lead with his 99th career goal in the 58th minute, finishing into an empty net after being set up by Mauricio Castro, but Doe tied the game just three minutes later with help from Jaime Moreno … Doe then won the game for the home side in the 80th minute, running on to Santino Quaranta’s flicked header and rocketing a shot past Revs goalkeeper Matt Reis.

NEWS & NOTES

NEW ENGLAND ONE OF THREE REMAINING UNBEATEN TEAMS
Following the results around Major League Soccer this past weekend, the Revolution is now one of just three teams remaining in the league without a loss in 2009 … five teams entered the weekend unbeaten, but both D.C. United and Seattle Sounders FC tasted defeat for the first time this season – and in Seattle’s case, for the first time ever … now four weeks into the MLS season, only New England (2-0-1, 7 pts.), Chicago (2-0-2, 8 pts.) and Chivas USA (3-0-1, 10 pts.) remain unbeaten.

REVOLUTION’S FIRST AWAY GAME VIEWING PARTY IS THIS FRIDAY NIGHT
Throughout the 2009 season, the Revolution will host a series of away game viewing parties at local establishments in New England, and the first event of the series is set for this week’s match at D.C. United on Friday, April 17 ... the viewing party will take place at McGreevy’s (911 Boylston Street, Boston) with coverage of the match set to begin at 7 p.m. on ESPN2 ... there will be no cover charge to enter McGreevy’s, and the Rev Girls and team representatives will be on hand with giveaways and prizes for all those in attendance.

REVOLUTION RESTED AND READY TO GO …
The Revs will be eager to return to the field when they visit D.C. United on Friday night (April 17), as the players will have had 12 days off since their most recent match against FC Dallas (April 4) … in contrast, D.C. will have had just five days of rest since its most recent match, which was played across the country at Real Salt Lake (April 11) … while the other 14 teams in the league all took the field on Saturday (April 11), the Revolution had a bye week and a much-needed chance to recover from a rash of injuries … although teams typically don’t prefer time off early in the season, with 10 players listed on the most recent injury report (Friday, April 10), the timing of the Revolution’s bye couldn’t have been much better … in 2008, New England’s longest break all season was nine days in between the SuperLiga group stage (July 20) and semifinal round (July 30).

… ALTHOUGH RFK STADIUM ISN’T A FAVORITE DESTINATION
The Revolution has not enjoyed many previous trips to the Nation’s Capital, as the club is just 6-16-3 all-time in regular-season matches at RFK Stadium … not only have the Revs struggled to earn results in D.C., but the defense has been shaky, allowing an average of 2.00 goals per game in regular-season matches (50 GA, 25 games) … the Revolution is 0-2-1 in its last three regular-season visits to RFK Stadium and hasn’t earned a point since April 19, 2007 (1-1 draw) … meanwhile, New England’s last regular-season win in D.C. came on Oct. 7, 2006 (2-1) … the Revs did, however, win the 2006 Eastern Conference Championship with a 1-0 win at RFK Stadium on Nov. 5, 2006.

FAMILIAR FOES RENEW RIVALRY
After facing each other four times in all competitions in 2008, New England and D.C. will renew their rivalry with their first meeting of 2009 on Friday night (April 17) … this will mark the 57th all-time meeting between the original MLS clubs in all competitions, representing the greatest total of the games the Revs have played against any opponent … meanwhile, it will be the 51st regular-season meeting between the teams, also marking the most the Revolution has played against any team … fittingly, the match will be broadcast in high definition for a national television audience, as it will be ESPN2’s MLS Game of the Week.

NYASSI WINS MLS GOAL OF THE WEEK
Gambian midfielder Sainey Nyassi earned MLS Goal of the Week honors for Week 3 following his game-tying strike in the Revolution’s 2-1 victory over FC Dallas on Saturday, April 4, at Gillette Stadium … with the Revs trailing 1-0 in the 56th minute, Nyassi latched onto a long pass out of the midfield by Shalrie Joseph on the right wing … going one-on-one with FCD defender George John, Nyassi dipped his shoulder to the right before cutting inside and firing a left-footed drive under the crossbar from 18 yards out … although the second-year speedster has scored just three career goals, the win marks his second career Goal of the Week award, as he also nabbed the honors for his goal against Houston in Week 1 of the 2008 season.

ASSENGUE JOINS REVS, BEGINS TRAINING
Newly-signed Cameroonian forward Stephane Assengue trained with the Revolution for the first time last week after receiving his U.S. P-1 Visa and being added to the club’s roster … Assengue arrived into Boston last Sunday night (April 5), completed his entrance physical on Monday (April 6) and was in gear for training on Tuesday morning (April 7) … he will be available for selection for the Revolution’s next match at D.C. on Friday night (April 17).

REVOLUTION WAIVES ARGENIS FERNANDEZ
The Revolution announced on April 7 that the club waived Costa Rican forward Argenis Fernandez … with his departure, the team opened an international roster spot, which will be filled by recently-signed Ghanaian defender Emmanuel Osei upon receipt of his International Transfer Certificate … Fernandez, 22, was signed by the Revolution on March 11, 2008, after playing his entire professional career with Santos Guapiles of Costa Rica’s Primera Division … he was loaned by the Revs to Costa Rican power LD Alajuelense on July 2, 2008, where he spent the remainder of the 2008 calendar year … Fernandez made two substitute appearances with the Revs before being loaned out.
