Following the club's league-leading ninth victory of the season against Toronto FC last Saturday night at Gillette Stadium, the New England Revolution will look to continue its winning ways when it travels to California to take on the Los Angeles Galaxy at 10:30 p.m. ET (7:30 p.m. PT) on Friday, July 4, at The Home Depot Center.
The game will be televised live on TV38, while Cox 3 in Rhode Island will simulcast TV38’s broadcast. Radio listeners will also be able to catch the action on the WEEI Radio Network. Following the match, the Revolution’s exclusive postgame show, “Revs Wrap,” will stream live on www.revolutionsoccer.net, and the show will also be achieved on the site for future use.
This weekend’s meeting is the first of two between the Revs and the Galaxy this season, with the regular-season series coming to a close on Aug. 30 at Gillette Stadium in a game that will be televised nationally on HDNet.
The Revolution was undefeated in its two matches with L.A. during the 2007 season, sweeping the regular-season series between the two clubs for the second straight season. In the first meeting on May 12 at The Home Depot Center, the Revs earned a 3-2 victory behind a pair of goals by Taylor Twellman and an additional tally by Adam Cristman. The match ended with a similar result when the two teams met again on Aug. 12 at Gillette Stadium, as New England secured a 1-0 victory behind an unassisted 55th minute strike by Twellman.
Following its most recent MLS regular-season match against Toronto FC, the Revolution began its U.S. Open Cup title defense with a third-round match in the 2008 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup against the Richmond Kickers on Tuesday night at Veterans Stadium in New Britain, Conn. Following an almost two-hour rain delay, the Revs defeated the United Soccer League Second Division club, 3-0, behind second-half goals from Sam Brill, Joe Germanese and Twellman. Brill tallied the first goal of the match in the 46th minute, snapping a header off a Chris Tierney corner kick past Richmond goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale. Germanese increased the New England lead to 2-0, finishing a feed from Chase Hilgenbrinck in the 63rd minute. Twellman added the insurance for the hosts in the 67th minute, heading a cross from Tierney off the crossbar and into the net. Revolution goalkeeper Doug Warren’s five-save effort earned him the 3-0, shutout victory.
New England enters this Friday’s match looking to build on its recent MLS regular-season success, while Los Angeles will look to rebound from a difficult loss this past weekend. Last Saturday night, the Revolution (9-4-3, 30 pts.) preserved its spot atop the MLS table with a 2-1 victory over Toronto FC at Gillette Stadium. Meanwhile, the Galaxy (6-5-3, 21 pts.) was upended, 4-1, by D.C. United at RFK Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Midfielder Steve Ralston scored his team-leading fifth and sixth goals of the season to lift New England to a 2-1 victory over Toronto FC. Ralston opened the scoring for the Revs in the 12th minute, tapping in the rebound from Cristman’s header that deflected off the right post. Ralston increased New England’s lead in the 59th minute, corralling the rebound of a Kheli Dube shot off the crossbar and faking out a Toronto defender before placing what would be the game-winning strike in the net. The Reds cut the Revolution’s lead in half in the 78th minute, as New England midfielder Shalrie Joseph misdirected a header off a TFC free kick into his own net. The Revs held on to their 2-1 lead to secure their league-best ninth victory of the season. With the New England victory, head coach Steve Nicol and his staff earned the honor of coaching the MLS All-Stars against English Premier League side West Ham United on July 24 at Toronto’s BMO Field.
The Galaxy’s struggles with D.C. United began early on Sunday afternoon at RFK Stadium, as United’s Jaime Moreno converted a penalty kick in the fifth minute to give D.C. an early 1-0 lead. Edson Buddle scored L.A.’s lone goal in the 26th minute, finishing a feed from Landon Donovan, but it would not be enough as a pair of goals by Luciano Emilio and an additional tally from Marcelo Gallardo lifted D.C. to a 4-1 victory.
Ralston paces the New England attack with six goals this season, a mark tied for fifth-best in the league. Ralston’s three assists are also tied with Dube for the team-lead. Matt Reis, who has played every minute of every game in goal for the Revolution this season, is tied for second in the league with five shutouts and ranks third among MLS goalkeepers with a 1.13 goals against average.
Donovan leads the Los Angeles offense with a league-leading 11 goals this season, while teammate Buddle’s 10 goals are tied for second in MLS. Donovan’s seven assists are also tied for a league-best mark. Steve Cronin has played every minute of every game in goal for L.A. this season, recording a 2.00 goals against average and two shutouts
New England and Los Angeles last met on Aug. 12, 2007 at Gillette Stadium, when an unassisted tally by Twellman lifted the Revs to a 1-0 victory. After a scoreless first half, Twellman netted the lone goal of the match in the 55th minute, corralling a loose ball that deflected off Galaxy defender Ty Harden and slotting it past goalkeeper Joe Cannon. Reis made four stops en route to his then league-leading eighth shutout of the season.
The Galaxy holds a narrow edge over the Revolution in the all-time, regular-season series, 12-11-4. However, New England is unbeaten in the last seven regular-season meetings between the two sides, 5-0-2, outscoring Los Angeles, 13-5, in those seven matches. The Revs have enjoyed most of their success against L.A. at home, going 8-3-1 in matches played in Foxborough, Mass., and an undefeated 5-0-1 at Gillette Stadium. In comparison, the Revolution is 3-9-3 in matches played in California and 2-2-2 at The Home Depot Center. Additionally, with the Revs winning the last four regular-season meetings between the two clubs, the Galaxy hasn’t earned a point against New England since July 27, 2005, when the sides drew, 1-1, at Gillette Stadium. The Revolution and the Galaxy have met three times outside of the regular season – in both the 2002 and 2005 MLS Cup final and the 2001 U.S. Open Cup championship – with Los Angeles defeating New England in overtime in all three matches.
Twellman leads the Revolution with seven career goals against Los Angeles, while Ralston has added six goals and a team-high seven assists against the Galaxy.
Reis - who began his professional career with Los Angeles and played five seasons for the club - has a 4-0-2 record against the Galaxy with an 0.67 goals against average and three shutouts.
Following Friday night’s match, the Revolution will return to action on Sunday, July 13, when the club hosts Mexican side Santos Laguna in SuperLiga play. The Revs earned one of MLS’ four entries into SuperLiga – a tournament that pits the top American teams against the top Mexican clubs – and for the second straight year, the winner of the tournament’s final will receive a $1 million dollar purse – the largest prize in North American soccer history.
The Revs next regular-season MLS match will be on Saturday, Aug. 9, when they host the Chicago Fire at 7:30 p.m. at Gillette Stadium. The match will be televised nationally on HDNet.
