After taking over the top spot in the Eastern Conference with a 2-2 draw against D.C. United last Thursday at Gillette Stadium, the New England Revolution will look to preserve its place atop the table when the team hosts FC Dallas at 6:30 p.m. ET on Friday, June 6, at Gillette Stadium.
The game will be the first half of a special soccer doubleheader, which will also feature a match between the national teams of Brazil – currently the world’s second-ranked team – and Venezuela, which is set for 8:30 p.m. ET. The Revolution match will be televised locally on Comcast Sports Net and radio listeners can catch the action on the WEEI Radio Network.
Friday night’s match is the second of the season between New England and Dallas, rounding out the regular-season series. The teams last met on Thursday, April 24 at Pizza Hut Park as part of ESPN2’s MLS Primetime Thursday. A goal by Khano Smith in the 72nd minute helped lift New England to a 1-0 victory over the Hoops, ending their reign as the last unbeaten team in MLS.
The Revs were successful against FCD during the 2007 season, sweeping their two-match series with the Hoops. In the first meeting of the season, a Taylor Twellman goal in the 13th minute lifted New England to a 1-0 shutout victory over Dallas on April 29 at Pizza Hut Park. The two teams met again on Sept. 15 at Gillette Stadium, when a pair of goals from Pat Noonan and unassisted tallies by Steve Ralston and Smith left FCD on the wrong side of a 4-2 decision.
New England and Dallas enter this Friday’s match after each earned draws in their matches this past week. Last Thursday night the Revolution (6-3-2, 20 pts.) played to a 2-2 draw with D.C. United at Gillette Stadium to preserve its position atop the Eastern Conference standings. Meanwhile, the Hoops (3-4-4, 13 pts.) played two matches during the week, first drawing 2-2 with the Houston Dynamo on Wednesday night at Pizza Hut Park before suffering a 2-1 loss to the Colorado Rapids on Sunday afternoon at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
Scores by Adam Cristman and Kheli Dube – his third goal in as many games – helped the Revs battle back from a two-goal deficit to earn a draw with D.C. After trailing by two goals early in the second half, Cristman put New England on the board in the 59th minute, netting a rebound off a Dube shot that was partially blocked by a United defender. The hosts leveled the score in the 72nd minute when Dube scored his third goal in as many games. Steve Ralston sent an out-swinging free kick from the right side toward the far post where Jeff Larentowicz headed the ball across the face of the goal in perfect position for Dube to bury a header in the back of the net. Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis helped preserve the draw by recording a season-high eight saves during the contest.
The FCD offense had help from three different goal scorers during its two matches last week, but struggled to find a win. In Wednesday nights match against the Houston Dynamo, a first half goal by Kenny Cooper in the 36th minute gave the Hoops a 1-0 edge at halftime. Houston’s Corey Ashe netted a cross-pass from teammate Brian Ching in the 59th minute to tie the score before FCD’s Drew Moor answered, snapping a header off an Andre Rocha free kick past Dynamo goalkeeper Pat Onstad in the 69th minute to give the hosts a 2-1 advantage. The Hoops could not hold on for the victory, however, relinquishing their lead for a second time in the third minute of second-half stoppage time, when Dwayne De Rosario added an unassisted tally to end the match in a draw, 2-2. FCD’s late game woes continued on the road against the Colorado Rapids Sunday afternoon. The Rapids jumped out to an early 1-0 lead courtesy of a Conor Casey goal in the seventh minute. Dallas’ Dominic Oduro fired a loose ball past Colorado goalkeeper Preston Burpo in the 44th minute to even the score, but the Hoops couldn’t hold on for the draw as a Tom McManus goal in the 72nd minute lifted the Rapids to a 2-1 victory, ending FCD’s two-game unbeaten streak.
The Revolution and FCD last met earlier this season on April 24 at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas as part of ESPN2’s MLS Primetime Thursday. Despite missing six regular starters for the match, New England was able to create many early scoring chances as the two teams battled back-and-forth looking for the first goal of the match. After a scoreless first half, Smith finally put the Revs on the board in the 72nd minute, curling a low shot inside the far post from the top of the box. Reis made four saves during the contest - including a save on an 86th minute Hoops corner kick opportunity – to preserve the Revolution lead and earn his second shutout of the season.
Dube enters Friday’s match pacing the Revs offense with three goals and one assist. With a goal in each of the past three matches, Dube is tied with Jorge Flores and Jesse Marsch – both of Chivas USA – for the longest current streak of consecutive games with a goal scored in the league. Ralston leads the Revolution in assists with three, two of which have been game-winners. Reis is currently tied for the league lead with four shutouts on the season, and ranks second in MLS with a 1.18 goals against average.
Cooper leads the Dallas offense having recorded six goals and one assist on the season. Rocha enter’s Friday’s match ranking second in MLS with five assists, two of which have been game-winners.
New England leads the all-time, regular-season series with FCD, 20-9-1, and holds a 9-5-0 edge at home against Dallas, including a 5-1-0 record at Gillette Stadium. The Revs 20 all-time victories over Dallas also represent the club’s second-highest win total against any MLS team. The series history between the two teams also extends past regular-season play, as New England defeated Dallas, 3-2, to win its first-ever cup championship in the U.S. Open Cup Final on Oct. 3, 2007.
The Revolution enters Friday’s match having won the last four regular-season meetings between the two clubs at Gillette Stadium dating back to 2004, having outscored the Hoops, 10-4, in those four contests.
Twellman is New England’s all-time leading scorer against Dallas with 14 goals, a figure that marks his greatest total against any MLS team. Seven of Twellman’s 14 goals against FCD have served as game-winners.
Ralston currently leads all Revs players with 14 career assists against the Hoops, including seven in 12 games while a member of the Revs.
Additionally, two of Smith’s seven career goals are against Dallas, including the game-winner in this season’s previous meeting on April 24.
Reis is 8-2-0 in his Revolution career against Dallas, posting a 1.20 goals against average with five shutouts.
The Revs will return to the road for their next match on Thursday, June 12, when they will visit the defending MLS Cup champion Houston Dynamo at 9 p.m. ET at Robertson Stadium. The game will be televised nationally at part of ESPN2’s MLS Primetime Thursday and will be available on ESPN2 HD. Radio listeners will be able to tune in on the WEEI Radio Network.
