FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - Taylor Twellman stuck for the games’ only goal in the 55th minute as the New England Revolution earned a 1-0 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy on Sunday evening at Gillette Stadium. The crowd of 35,402 on hand watched as the Revs extended their unbeaten streak against LA to seven games while also extending their lead in the Eastern Conference to six points over second-place D.C.
Matt Reis recorded his league-leading eighth shutout of the season, making four saves in the win. With the victory, New England (10-4-6, 36 pts.) became the first Eastern team to reach the 10-win plateau for the season. Los Angeles (3-7-5, 14 pts.) extended its winless streak to four games with the loss.
Twellman broke the scoreless game in the 55th minute. Shalrie Joseph threaded a pass out of the midfield into the box, where it deflected off LA defender Ty Harden. Twellman ran onto it and around Galaxy midfielder Kevin Harmse to collect the loose ball, and slotted a shot past LA keeper Joe Cannon for the 1-0 lead. It was Twellman’s ninth goal of the season, and his fourth game-winner of the year.
Los Angeles’ Landon Donovan had a chance to tie the game in the 84th minute. He pounced on a loose ball two yards from the goal line after the Revs failed to clear, but Reis made the point-blank save to preserve the shutout.
The 35,402 fans in attendance marked the highest attendance at Gillette Stadium since the MLS Cup 2002 drew 61,316.
The Revs return to action on Thursday, Aug. 16, when they travel to face the Colorado Rapids at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo. That game will kick off at 9 p.m. ET and will be seen live on Fox Sports New England and heard on the WEEI Radio Network.
