Game Preview: Revolution at Real Salt Lake
The Revs travel to Salt Lake City to take on Real Salt Lake this Saturday at 9:30 p.m. ET.

The Revolution looks to improve on its stunning road record this weekend as the side travels west to take on Real Salt Lake at 9:30 p.m., on Saturday, July 28, at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Fox Soccer Channel will broadcast the game live, while the WEEI Radio Network will provide a radio broadcast of the match.

New England (7-3-6, 27 pts.) is looking to extend a three-game unbeaten streak and is primed to attack Real on its home turf. The Revs are the league’s best team on the road, posting a 4-2-2 record away from Gillette Stadium. New England and the New York Red Bulls are currently tied for first place in the Eastern Conference, with Kansas City, Columbus, and D.C. all within three points of the leaders.

Real Salt Lake (1-8-6, 9 pts.) has scuffled this season, gaining its only win in a 2-1 victory against D.C. United on June 23. When Real visited New England earlier this season on June 2, both goalkeepers posted shutouts en route to a 0-0 draw. Salt Lake ‘keeper Nick Rimando had a particularly spectacular match, warding off 13 shots on goal, including three on both Taylor Twellman and Jay Heaps. In the ninth minute, Twellman had an opportunity to score, but his header clanked off the crossbar after he beat Rimando. Despite out-shooting Salt Lake 23-8, New England could not break through for a goal and was forced to settle for just one point at home.

The Revs head to Utah on the tail of a 3-3 draw against the Houston Dynamo in Foxborough Sunday night. What was billed as a marquee match-up between the respective conference leaders in the East and West in MLS did not fail to deliver excitement. After Twellman went close early on in the sixth and eighth minutes, Pat Noonan beat Houston’s defenders and ended the Dynamo’s MLS-record scoreless streak at 726 minutes, chipping a ball over Dynamo goalkeeper Pat Onstad’s head in the 32nd minute and scoring a goal that has been nominated for the Sierra Mist MLS Goal of the Week.

The Revs took the 1-0 lead into halftime, but Houston’s Dwayne DeRosario emphatically began a scorching second half of scoring by both teams by rocketing a 30-yard shot by Revs’ netminder Matt Reis. The goal was the first of five in a 21-minute span between the two clubs. DeRosario’s score was followed by goals from Twellman in the 51st and two quick strikes from Houston forward Brian Ching in the 60th and 61st minutes. New England midfielder Shalrie Joseph scored the equalizing - and final - goal of the match in the 66th minute, blasting a penalty kick to the left side of the goal as Onstad dove to the right.

In previous matches between New England and Salt Lake, the Revs hold the edge with a 2-1-2 record. However, the Revolution has not won a game against Real since Salt Lake’s inaugural season in 2005. That season, New England won both matches in the two-game season series. For the Revolution side, both Twellman and Khano Smith have scored two goals in the past against Real Salt Lake. In fact, two of Smith’s four career goals have come against Salt Lake. The only three players in Real Salt Lake’s history who have scored against New England (now head coach and former midfielder Jason Kreis – 2, forward Jeff Cunningham – 1, and midfielder Chris Klein – 1) are no longer with the club.

Revolution defender Jay Heaps leads the squad with two assists against RSL, both of them coming in the match on August 10, 2005, in Foxborough, which was the first-ever game between the sides. Real midfielder Andy Williams is the only player currently on the team that has notched an assist against New England while with the Salt Lake side. Reis has three shutouts against RSL in his career.

Following the game, the Revolution Reserves will play a match against the Real Salt Lake reserves at 10 a.m., on Sunday, July 28. After the brief road trip, New England will return to Foxborough for an extended home stand, with three MLS matches and a U.S. Open Cup game scheduled August 2-12. The next match will be against the Kansas City Wizards at 7 p.m. on August 2, at Gillette Stadium. The Revolution play in the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup against the Harrisburg City Islanders at 7:30 p.m. on August 8, also in Foxborough.
