EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Andy Dorman scored his seventh goal of the season – the only goal of the game – to lift the New England Revolution to a 1-0 road victory over the New York Red Bulls at Giants Stadium on Saturday evening. Steve Ralston recorded an assist on Dorman’s goal and in the process took over the Major League Soccer record for career assists, collecting his 115th career assist. He also tied former Tampa Bay teammate Carlos Valderrama for the MLS career lead in game-winning assists with 33.
The victory lifted New England (7-3-5, 26 pts.) into first place in the Eastern Conference, leapfrogging the Red Bulls (7-6-3, 24 pts.), who entered the game in the top spot.
The win also improved the Revs’ MLS-best road record to 4-2-2, and extended their undefeated streak against the Red Bulls to six games dating back to the 2005 season.
New England goalkeeper Matt Reis made five saves to record his sixth shutout of the season, lifting him into a tie for the MLS lead in the category.
On his record-setting evening, Ralston began the play that set-up Dorman’s game-winning goal. He stripped New York midfielder Clint Mathis in the Red Bulls’ attacking third and turned the play around in favor of the Revs. He ran to midfield and backheeled a pass to Shalrie Joseph, who first-timed an angled through ball between Red Bulls’ defense to Dorman on the right side. Dorman then ran toward goal and, from 19 yards out, ripped a shot just inside the far post, beating New York keeper Jon Conway for the 1-0 lead in the 38th minute.
The Revs nearly took a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute when Dorman got on the end of a loose ball in the box off of a Ralston free kick, but Red Bulls defender Seth Stammler cleared the ball off the line to keep the game scoreless early.
The Red Bulls responded with a chance of their own in the 16th minute. Off a deflected cross, Mathis put a shot on goal from inside the goal box, but it kicked off the post, and Reis made a reaction save on the rebound attempt. In the 28th minute, Juan Pablo Angel’s shot from the edge of the area found the corner of the goal where the post and crossbar meet to again deny a Red Bulls goal.
The physical battle between the rivals came to head in second-half stoppage time when Angel was ejected for elbowing Shalrie Joseph on a 50-50 ball at midfield. The game saw a total of five bookings: three cautions and an ejection for New York, and one yellow card for the Revs. New York also committed 20 fouls to New England’s 13.
The Revs return to MLS action on Sunday, July 22, when they host defending MLS Cup champions, the Houston Dynamo, at Gillette Stadium. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. TV38 will televise the game live and the WEEI Radio Network will also carry the game. Immediately following the first-team game, the clubs’ reserve sides will meet at 6:30 p.m. on the Gillette Stadium turf.
