FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - Andy Dorman scored the game-tying goal in the 64th minute to help the New England Revolution earn a 1-1 draw against Chivas USA at Gillette Stadium on Saturday night. The Revs fell behind in the fourth minute, but Dorman’s goal - his sixth of the season - knotted the score to help elevate the Revs into a tie for first place in the MLS Eastern Conference with D.C. United.
With an assist on Dorman’s goal, New England (6-4-5, 23 pts.) captain Steve Ralston tied the Major League Soccer career assist record as he recorded his 114th career assist. He is now even with former Tampa Bay Mutiny teammate Carlos Valderrama for the league’s career record, and one away from claiming the mark as his own. Chivas USA (6-5-3, 21 pts.) extended its winless streak on the road to three games.
After starting slowly, the Revs began to dictate the tone of the game midway through the first half. The Revs out-shot the Goats 6-1 in the final 20 minutes of the first half, and then carried the momentum into the second, where they out-shot the visitors 12-4 in the final 45 minutes - finishing with a 20-9 edge for the game. The Revs had a 7-1 advantage in shots on goal in the second half, including Dorman’s goal in the 64th minute. Despite pinning Chivas USA in their defensive third for much of the final half, Goats goalkeeper Preston Burpo made eight saves to keep the Revs from netting the go-ahead goal.
Chivas USA captain Claudio Suarez staked his side to an early 1-0 lead, staying back in the area on a corner kick and connecting with Alex Zotinca’s service in the fourth minute. Suarez got on the end of the outswinging kick and headed the ball down where it bounced past Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis for the early one-goal lead.
After Khano Smith came on for the Revs to start the second half, the Revs continued to boss play. Smith saw his first shot saved by Burpo, and Ralston hit the right post with a rebound shot from the edge of the area. Taylor Twellman, too, entered the game in the second half, coming on in the 56th minute to add an extra spark. He saw his first two shots saved in spectacular fashion by Burpo, both of which had eyes for the goal. Twellman made his first appearance in a Revs uniform in five weeks as he was with the U.S. National Team at the CONCACAF Gold Cup and Copa America.

The Revs finally broke through and scored the equalizer in the 64th minute when Dorman got on the end of a Ralston corner kick service. Positioned in the middle of the area off the far post, Dorman took the service in the air and bounced a shot past Burpo for his sixth goal of the season, matching his previous career season-best.
The Revs continued to keep Chivas USA under pressure, but the squad was unable to connect for the game-winning goal in the closing minute although Jay Heaps and Pat Noonan twice each had chances to score.
The Revolution returns to MLS action next Saturday, July 14, when they travel to Eastern Conference foe New York Red Bulls to play a 7:30 p.m. game at Giants Stadium. Fox Soccer Channel will televise the game live nationally, and the WEEI Radio Network will carry the game on the radio.
Prior to Saturday’s MLS game, the Revs will open play in the 2007 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, when they travel to face the Rochester Rhinos of the United Soccer Leagues First Division. That game will kickoff at 7:35 p.m. on Tuesday, July 10, at PAETEC Park in downtown Rochester. A live audio broadcast of that game will be streamed live on revolutionsoccer.net.
