Cristman’s Late Goal Lifts Revolution Over Pioneros
Rookie forward nets goal in 79th minute from Smith to give Revs the 1-0 victory

CANCUN, Mexico – Rookie forward Adam Cristman scored the game’s only goal in the 79th minute to lead the New England Revolution to a 1-0 victory over Pioneros de Cancun on Thursday evening at Estadia Cancun 86. Cristman converted a Khano Smith cross late in the game for his second goal in as many games during the Revs’ preseason.

With the victory, the Revolution improved to 4-0 in its preseason exhibition matches this year.

After a scoreless first half during which neither team dominated possession – although the Revs held a slight edge in the play – Revolution head coach Steve Nicol substituted almost his entire lineup at the start of the second half. The Revs then maintained control of the game, especially in the midfield, and finally broke through with Cristman’s goal in the 79th minute.

The Revs’ best chance of the first half came from the midfield combination of Joe Franchino and Miguel Gonzalez. Franchino intercepted a Pioneros pass near the edge of the center circle, dribbled up field and flipped the ball over the drawn-in defense to an oncoming Gonzalez. Gonzalez collected the ball and then chipped a shot over Pioneros goalkeeper Nestor Alvarez, but his shot was inches wide of the net to the right.

In the second half, Jeff Larentowicz nearly put the Revs ahead in the 59th minute when he met Steve Ralston’s corner kick service from the left side. Larentowicz rose on the far post to meet the ball, but headed his shot narrowly wide right. In the 71st minute, Andy Dorman put a hard free kick on frame from 23 yards out – and through the five-man Pioneros wall – but substitute goalkeeper Erick Ramirez made the save to keep the game scoreless.

Four minutes later in the 74th, Taylor Twellman’s header on the far post off Dorman’s corner kick was wide right. The Revs regrouped and on their next push downfield, Twellman’s cross from the left found Jay Heaps on the far post, but Heap’s header was punched over the crossbar by substitute goalkeeper Javier Hermenegildo. On the ensuing corner kick, Larentowicz again sent a header over the net.

Pioneros had its first chance of the evening in the 78th minute when Pedro Noyola collected the ball at the edge of the center circle and broke in on the net with James Riley closely defending him. Noyola created space from Riley and broke in one-on-one with Revs keeper Matt Reis, but his shot from just inside the corner of the penalty area was high. On Reis’ resulting restart, Shalrie Joseph met the ball in the midfield and then found Smith running down the left wing, where he ran around two defenders deep into the corner before crossing the ball to Cristman for the goal.

Smith was ejected from the game just minutes after Cristman’s goal and Pioneros had a pair of chances on corner kicks, but saw shots attempts sail high of frame and not threaten Reis or the Revs. Smith received an initial caution for delay of game in the 83rd minute, and then was shown an immediate red card for dissent.

Reis and rookie goalkeeper Brad Knighton combined for the shutout, as Knighton earned the start in goal.

The Revolution will play two more matches to conclude its 2007 preseason schedule, traveling to New Orleans to face CD Olimpia (Honduras) on Sunday, March 25 at 5 p.m. CT (6 p.m. ET), and USL side New Orleans Shell Shockers on Wednesday, March 28, at 7 p.m. CT (8 p.m. ET).
