HAMILTON, Bermuda - The New England Revolution scored two goals in the second half to earn a 3-1 victory over the Bermuda National Team at the National Stadium on Tuesday evening in the team’s first game of the 2007 preseason.
Andy Dorman and trialist Jorge Ramirez scored the Revs’ second-half goals, while rookie Wells Thompson and Willie Sims recorded assists in the game.
Bermuda went ahead 1-0 in the 11th minute when Keith Jennings slammed home the rebound of a 32-yard Ralph Bean shot past a diving Doug Warren. After controlling play for most of the first half, the Revs knotted the score in the 45th minute on a Bermuda own goal after a scramble in the six-yard box.
In the second half, the Revolution went ahead for good in the 80th minute when Dorman powered home a cross from Thompson. Two minutes later in the 82nd, Sims intercepted a pass and broke into the box from the bottom of the center circle, finding Ramirez who slotted home calmly from 17 yards out.
The Revs sustained the attack in the first half, controlling possession and spending most of the period in their attacking half of the field. Bermuda keeper Tim Figuerido was the difference, turning away six shots and tipping another off the crossbar.
Taylor Twellman and Revs draftee Chris Loftus helped created the own goal that leveled the score heading in to halftime, when trialist Takuya Yamada sent an inch perfect cross into the goal box from the right side. As Loftus crashed the goalmouth, the ball bounced through a tangle of legs directly to Twellman, whose saw two consecutive shots of his blocked. The ball then ricocheted off of Bermuda defender Jalani Scott into his own goal to send the teams into the dressing rooms level at 1-1.
In the second half, Revs head coach Steve Nicol made wholesale substitutions, changing all 11 players on the field. New England continued to attack, and appeared to have scored the go-ahead goal in the 63rd minute when rookie Amaechi Igwe’s blast from outside the 18-yard box looked to have crossed the goal line, but Figuerido smothered the ball and sent it back into play.
The Revs return to preseason action on Thursday, Feb. 22, when they face the Los Angeles Galaxy at the National Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. ET, and a live Internet audio broadcast is scheduled to be available at revolutionsoccer.net.
