Weekly Update: USOC & Vancouver
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution (5-4-5, 20 pts.), coming off a 0-0 draw with D.C. United, takes on the New York Red Bulls in the fourth round of the 2013 U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday before traveling to Vancouver to take on the Whitecaps (4-5-4, 16 pts.) Saturday night.
Kickoff for Wednesday’s Open Cup meeting is set for 7:35 p.m. at Harvard University’s Soldiers Field Soccer Stadium.
Saturday’s match against the Whitecaps is set for 10 p.m., at BC Place in Vancouver, British Columbia. Comcast SportsNet will televise the game, while 98.5 The Sports Hub will carry the game on its HD2 channel.
This will be the only meeting between the two clubs this season. The Revs won the only meeting, a 4-1 win at Gillette Stadium, in 2012.

Six Revs up for fan All-Star Game voting
Six Revs players are among the eligible to be voted to the Fan XI for the 2013 MLS All-Star Game against Italian giants AS Roma on July 31 at Kansas City’s Sporting Park … the New England players eligible for Fan XI voting include Diego Fagundez, Andrew Farrell, Jose Goncalves, Lee Nguyen, Kelyn Rowe and Bobby Shuttleworth… fans may vote online HERE … fans can also vote via text message by sending a player’s last name to 22442, or via Twitter on June 20 and June 21 … a panel of media members nominated a total of 115 players to the fan ballot.
Fourth round of U.S. Open Cup on tap
The Revs kick off fourth-round action in the 2013 U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday night against the New York Red Bulls at 7:30 p.m., at Harvard University’s Soldier Field Soccer Stadium … the Revs are winless in two Open Cup previous appearances against New York … New York defeated the Revs, 2-1 in extra time, on Aug. 27, 2003 in the quarterfinals, and by a 3-0 score line on May 12, 2010, in an MLS Play-In Round.
Two Revs called back up
On Monday, the Revs re-called midfielder Gabe Latigue and defender Tyler Polak from Rochester – the team’s USL PRO affiliate – for Wednesday’s U.S. Open Cup fourth-round match against the New York Red Bulls … the pair was also re-called ahead of the team’s third-round match against Rochester … in that match, Latigue started and played 90 minutes at right back, while Polak entered in the 33rd minute and played the rest of the game at left back in the Revs’ 5-1 win.
North of the border bout with Whitecaps
After wrapping up a three-game home stand, the Revs next head to western Canada to take on Vancouver Whitecaps FC in the only meeting between the two teams this season … the Revs are 2-0-1 against the Whitecaps since the club entered MLS in 2011 … Lee Nguyen scored twice and added in assist in the Revs’ 4-1 win over the Whitecaps on May 12, 2012, the only time the teams played last season … Vancouver has not lost at home this season (3-0-3) and are coming off a 3-2 loss at Seattle on Saturday night.
Successful home stand
Saturday’s 0-0 draw against D.C. United marked the end of the Revs’ three-game home stand … in those three games, the Revs posted a 2-0-1 record and recorded three straight shutouts, collecting seven out of a possible nine points … the Revs’ success at home leap-frogged the Revs up the Eastern Conference standings to within two points of third place.
Unbeaten streak pushed to five
Saturday’s 0-0 draw against D.C. United pushed the Revs’ unbeaten run in MLS matches to five games (3-0-2), dating back to July 11 and a 1-1 draw against New York … in that span, the Revs have out-scored MLS teams 10-1, with the lone goal coming on July 11 by the RedBulls … this is the second time under head coach Jay Heaps that Revs have gone five games unbeaten … in 2012, the Revs posted a 2-0-3 record from June 2 to July 8 (W-D-D-D-W) … including the team’s U.S. Open Cup victory on May 28, the Revs are six games unbeaten overall, with a 4-0-2 mark, and out-scoring teams 15-2 in that span.
Top-ranked defense improves
It’s been almost one month since Bobby Shuttleworth and the Revs defense last conceded a goal in MLS action (May 11 in a 1-1 draw against New York) … the club is currently riding its longest shutout streak – 395 minutes – in team history … prior to the current streak with Shuttleworth in goal, Matt Reis backed the last longest streak of 386 minutes during the 2009 season ... with the shutout against D.C. on Saturday, the Revs improved its league-leading team goals against average to 0.62, while posting its league-leading ninth shutout.
Another clean sheet for Shuttleworth
Goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth has been in goal throughout the club’s most recent 395-minute shutout streak, the league’s second-longest this season behind Sporting KC’s 546 minute shutout streak (March 9 to April 20) … Shuttleworth picked up his seventh shutout – tying him for the league lead with Sporting KC’s Jimmy Nielsen – in Saturday’s 0-0 draw against D.C. United … the goalkeeper has now posted four consecutive shutouts and has not conceded a goal since May 11 in a 1-1 draw against New York.

Goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth enters this week’s matches leading MLS in three goalkeeping categories: goals against average (0.75, tied with Colorado’s Clint Irwin), shutouts (7, tied with Sporting KC’s Jimmy Nielsen) and save percentage (80.4 percent) … Shuttleworth has posted a shutout in seven of his 12 matches played – 58.3 percent – a higher percentage than any other MLS keeper … additionally, Shuttleworth is making an average of 3.42 saves per game, tied for the third-highest per game total in MLS
Goncalves steps to center back forefront
The Revs’ defense has been rock solid since newcomer Jose Goncalves arrived via Sion SC this off-season … the 27-year-old Portuguese center back has backed MLS’ top defense and is the only Revs player to play every minute of every game this season … Goncalves has backed the Revs’ defense that has posted a league-best nine shutouts (two more than Sporting KC) and allowed a league-low nine goals (Colorado is second with 12 goals allowed) all while integrating eight different defenders into the four-man lineup through 14 games.
Fagundez finally cools off
After scoring goals in four straight games, Diego Fagundez was finally kept off of the score sheet against D.C. United in Saturday’s 0-0 draw … the four-game streak was the club’s longest since 2005 when Clint Dempsey also scored in five-straight games … Fagundez, just 18, still leads the team in goals (5) and shots on goal (10).
Supporters Cup set for June 29
Members of the Revs’ two official supporters groups – The Midnight Riders and The Rebellion – will meet at 7 p.m., at Gillette Stadium on Saturday, June 29 and vie for the Supporters Cup … all funds raised through the event will be donated to The One Fund Boston … the Midnight Riders won the first installment of the Supporters Cup last season and are looking forward to defending its title … Gillette Stadium’s Patriot Place gate (located at the north end of the stadium under the bridge and lighthouse in the nrg Plaza) will open at 6:30 p.m. for spectators … visit one of the two supporters groups’ sites - midnightriders.com or nerebellion.org - to find out how to support the event, either in person in the stands or through a straight donation.
THIS WEEK IN ROCHESTER
- The Rhinos played to a 1-1 draw against Montreal (MLS) last Friday at Sahlen’s Stadium
- On the season, the Rhinos are 1-7-4 overall
- The Revs currently have four players on loan to the Rochester Rhinos as part of the teams’ affiliation agreement: defender Bilal Duckett, midfielder Gabe Latigue, forward Matt Horth and defender Tyler Polak.
- Polak leads all four players with 11 games played (624 minutes) … Latigue has made nine appearances (630 minutes) … Duckett has played in eight games (565 minutes) and scored one goal … Horth has made seven appearances (386 minutes) and scored one goal
- Polak and Latigue were both recalled from Rochester on June 10 for the Revs U.S. Open Cup game against New York on Wednesday, and are scheduled to return to Rochester on June 13

REVOLUTION ACADEMY UPDATE
Youth teams close out season on the road
The Under-18s and Under-16s were in action last weekend, going a combined 0-1-3 on the road … the U18s battled Seacoast United to a 1-1 draw on Saturday, June 8, before drawing FC Westchester, 2-2, on Sunday, June 9 … the U16s met Seacoast United on Saturday, coming away with a scoreless draw, before suffering a 1-0 loss to FC Westchester on Sunday
Next stop: Dallas
Having closed out the 2012-13 U.S. Soccer Development Academy regular season, the Under-18s and Under-16s next head to Dallas, June 23-28 … the U18s have officially qualified for their third Development Academy playoffs in four seasons (2010, 2012, 2013) and will face a minimum of three teams in group play in Dallas … the U16s are currently sitting on the final playoff wild card spot for the Under 15/16 age bracket, but their place in the postseason depends on the outcome of next weekend’s match between BW Gottschee and Revolution Empire … a BW Gottschee win or a draw would propel the Revs’ U16s to the playoffs, while a Revolution Empire win would eliminate the Revs and send them to the College Showcase in Dallas instead.
2012-13 season records
The Under-18s finished the season with a 15-5-5 (50 pts.) record and are ranked third in the Northeast Division of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy’s East Conference with 2.00 points per game … the Under-16s closed out the season with a 11-7-7 record (40 pts.) and are currently in sixth place in the division … the Under-14s closed their season with a record of 13-3-2 (40 pts.) and ranked third in U.S. Club Soccer’s Northeast Pre-Academy League with 1.60 points per game.
Summer Player Development Programs enrolling
The Revolution Academy’s Player Development Programs are now enrolling for summer sessions, with locations all over New England … the Revolution Academy trains players of all abilities in all aspect of the game, including ball mastery, speed of play, coordination and balance and movement with and without the ball … the objective of all the training programs is to replicate the speed, tempo and environment of the Revolution Youth Teams’ training sessions … through the age-appropriate player development sessions, the Revolution Academy fosters an atmosphere that is competitive, challenging, demanding and fun … encouragement and support from the professional coaching staff allows every player to gain a better understanding of – and continued passion for – the game … more information, including the full spring and summer schedule, is available HERE.
