Reserves: Revs 1, Red Bulls 1
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Sainey Nyassi scored the equalizing goal in the 77th minute as the New England Revolution Reserves fought back to earn a 1-1 draw against the New York Red Bulls Reserves on Sunday night at Gillette Stadium. Guest player Quincy Amarikwa put the Red Bulls ahead in the 52nd minute as the teams played the first of two meetings this season, both at Gillette Stadium.
Despite the scoreless first half, the Revolution were under pressure from Amarikwa in a five-minute span midway through the stanza. Revolution Empire and U.S. Under-18 player pool goalkeeper Alexander Bono was called on to make three saves on Amarikwa in the 34th, 38th and 39th minutes to keep it scoreless headed into the break.
Ryan Guy had the Revs’ first go in the second half, forcing Jeremy Vuolo to save his shot from Diego Fagundez in the 47th minute. The 0-0 scoreline was short-lived, however, as Amerikwa finally figured out Bono and headed in Ryan Maduro’s cross on the back post in the 52nd minute.
New York guest player Giorgio Chirgadze then saw his 62nd-minute shot – from Amarikwa – ring off the post.
Nyassi leveled the score in the 77th minute, tapping in a square pass from Fernando Cardenas as a Red Bulls defender went down. Nyassi continued to be active and forced Vuolo to save his 86th minute shot.
Cardenas then had a chance to give the Revs the last-minute victory in the 90th minute, but his shot – from Nyassi – went off the crossbar.
Bono, who was joined on tonight’s squad by Revolution Empire teammate and U.S. Under-20 player pool midfielder Stefanos Stamoulacatos, made four saves in 90 minutes. Vuolo made three saves.
With the draw, the Revolution Reserves moved to 2-2-3 (9 pts.), while New York moved to 1-2-2 (5 pts.) on the season.
The Revs return to Reserve League action when they host the Montreal Impact Reserves on Monday, August 13, at the Lower Practice Field at Gillette Stadium. New York returns to Reserve action on Saturday, July 21, when they host the Sporting Kansas City reserves at Montclair State University.
