Mixed results for Under-16s and Under-18s during the weekend

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution Under-16 and Under-18 teams each played two matches at home on Saturday, March 19, and Sunday, March 20, against Potomac and Baltimore Bays Chelsea of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy’s Mid-Atlantic Division. The youth teams went a combined 1-2-1 for the second consecutive weekend.

The Under-18s battled Potomac to a 1-1 draw on Saturday. A 20th-minute goal gave the visitors the lead through to the second half, when Cole Denormandie (Lincoln, Mass.) – assisted by Fabio Machado, Jr. (Leominster, Mass.) – leveled the score in the 56th. The Revs continued to pressure, but were unable to capitalize despite outshooting their opponents 10-3.

After a scoreless first half on Sunday, the U18s found the back of the next in the 53rd minute. An attacking throw-in allowed Denormandie to collect the ball outside the box before serving in a cross. The Bays’ goalkeeper parried the ball away but only cleared as far as Cameron Bielski (Dover, Mass.), who emerged from a several-player scramble for the finish. The game took a turn when Machado was shown a red card for a handball in the box in the 78th minute, and Baltimore Bays Chelsea converted the resulting penalty kick. The visitors struck again in the final minutes of the match with the man advantage, scoring the game-winner in the 87th.

The Under-16s kicked off their weekend with an exciting 1-0 win against Potomac on Saturday. The Revs conceded a penalty kick at the end of a scoreless first half, prompting a deft save from goalkeeper Matthew Mozynski (Bellingham, Mass.). New England entered the second half with a renewed energy and continued to push for the go ahead goal. Just seconds into added time, Forest Sisk (Sudbury, Mass.) – assisted by Devin Devoy (North Attleboro, Mass.) – found the back of the net, giving the home team a full three points.

Sunday saw the injury-riddled U16s play another scoreless first half against Baltimore Bays Chelsea. A 49th-minute goal off of a corner kick put the visitors ahead, 1-0 – a result that would hold until the fulltime whistle. Mozynski again proved to be a solid presence in the net, while Declan McCabe (Weston, Mass.) and Dominik Machado (Attleboro, Mass.) demonstrated significant effort in the midfield.

The Revolution Under-18 team, now 4-6-1, slipped to third place in the Northeast Division after the weekend’s tie and loss. With a win and a loss, the Under-16s now hold a 5-4-2 record and remain in second place in the division. Both teams travel to New York next weekend, where they will play Met Oval in Maspeth on Saturday, March 26, and Cosmos Academy East in Brooklyn on Sunday, March 27.
