Youth Academy Update: March 28, 2011

Youth teams go 1-1-2 in New York during the weekend

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution Under-18 and Under-16 teams each played two matches in New York on Saturday, March 26, and Sunday, March 27, against Met Oval and Cosmos Academy East, both of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy’s Liberty Division. Improving upon the previous two weekends’ results, the youth squads came out of the weekend with a combined record of 1-1-2.

UNDER-18s
The Under-18s kicked off the weekend with a convincing 5-2 win over Met Oval on Saturday. An 18th-minute goal by Cole Denormandie (Lincoln, Mass.) – assisted by Cameron Bielski (Dover, Mass.) – gave the Revs the lead, which they then doubled in the 35th minute. The goal came as the result of a Bielski corner kick, which Matthew Keys (Norfolk, Mass.) was able to corral before Adrian Reifsnyder (Newton, Mass.) registered his first goal of the season. Met Oval leveled the score with goals in the 37th and 53rd minutes, but an unassisted goal from Matt Bitchell (Byfield, Mass.) in the 78th minute put the Revs back in front. Jack Hilger (Hopkinton, Mass.) then combined with fellow U16 Bitchell three minutes later to make it 4-2, and Felipe Fagundes (Lowell, Mass.) assisted Reifsnyder’s second goal of the game in the 90th minute to close out the match.

Buoyed by the return of several players who had remained in Foxborough for the reserve league game on Saturday night, the U18s battled Cosmos Academy East to a 3-3 draw on Sunday. Fabio Machado, Jr. (Leominster, Mass.) put the Revs ahead in the second minute of play, picking the ball off of a defender before firing a shot past the Cosmos’ goalkeeper. Then, in the 12th minute, a through ball from Michael Rincon (Malden, Mass.) allowed Bielski to net a left-footed shot from 20 yards out. Goals by the Cosmos in the 35th and 58th minutes tied the game at 2-2, but New England continued to push for another three points on the road. Bielski – assisted by Machado – scored his second goal of the game in the 71st minute, only to have the home team equalize again in the final minutes of the match.

UNDER-16s
The Under-16s played Met Oval to a 2-2 draw on Saturday. Danny Apajee (Cranston, R.I.) scored his first-ever goal for the Revolution in the 34th minute, getting a head on Christian Sady’s (North Andover, Mass.) well-placed service into the box. Met Oval equalized in the 39th minute, sending the teams into halftime with one goal apiece. The score held until the final 10 minutes of play, when Met Oval came up with the go ahead goal. Peguy Ngatcha (Manchester, N.H.) was brought down in the box shortly after and converted the resulting penalty kick in the 76th minute, earning the Revs one point on the road.

Looking a little travel-worn, the U16s dropped a 3-0 result to Cosmos Academy East on Sunday. Goals by the Cosmos in the second and ninth minutes saw the Revs facing an immediate deficit, and an additional New York goal in the 48th minute left them unable to recover.

With the weekend’s win and draw, the Revolution Under-18 team – now 5-6-2 – moved back into second place in the Northeast Division. The Under-16s now hold a 5-5-3 record after the weekend’s draw and loss, and remain in second place in the division. Both teams travel to New Jersey next weekend, where they will play Players Development Academy in Zarephath on Saturday, April 2, and the New York Red Bulls in Newark on Sunday, April 3.
