Revs Youth Update: June 8, 2010

Purchase, N.Y. & Marlboro, Mass. – The New England Revolution youth clubs played their final two games of the 2010 regular season with short numbers because of SATs and graduations, but refused to lose by compiling a 2-0-2 record for the weekend and now shift their focus to the playoffs. The Under-16s tied both of their games, at FC Westchester on Saturday and against D.C. United on Sunday, while the Under-18s swept their weekend games, a 2-1 win at FC Westchester followed by a 4-0 shutout victory over D.C. United on Sunday.

The U16s waited until almost the end of the first half to net their first goal of the game against FC Westchester. Sam Milbury (Peabody, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal in the 40th minute to close the first half, but Westchester quickly retaliated scoring in the 41st minute to tie the game at 1-1 to begin the second half.  Westchester scored another to go up 2-1 in the 77th minute, but the Revs quickly answered with a Diego Fagundez (Leominster, Mass.) goal in the waning moments, assisted by Mitch Taintor (Storrs, Conn.), ending the game in a 2-2 tie.

The U18s were off to a slow start allowing a Westchester goal in only the 5th minute of play.  However, picking up the pace, Felix DeBona (Everett, Mass.), making his debut for the U18s, scored in the 35th minute off an assist from Fernando Baptista (New Bedford, Mass.).  The Revs were able to clinch the win in the 80th minute when goalkeeper Jose Silva (Northborough, Mass.), filling in as a striker due to players being away for graduations and SAT’s, was awarded a free kick.  The goal was scored by Gustavo Santos (Framingham, Mass.) and assisted by Homero Morais (Somerville, Mass.). The Revs closed out the game with a 2-1 win.

On Sunday, the U16s were rocked with two quick goals by opponent D.C. United in the 20th and 24th minutes of play.  Not to be outdone, Diego Fagundez (Leominster, Mass.) scored off of a free kick in the 27th minute to make the score 2-1.  Cole Denormandie (Lincoln, Mass.) quickly followed in the 32nd minute with a goal assisted by Fagundez. The Revs closed out the weekend with another 2-2 tie.

The U18s put on a scoring clinic against Eastern Conference foe D.C. United on Sunday.  Starting in the 26th Michael Rincon (Malden, Mass.) scored after a solo run beating three United players. Homero Morais (Somerville, Mass.) followed suit in the 31st minute of play, scoring after a beautifully placed ball by Fernando Baptista (New Bedford, Mass.) found his feet. The Revs closed out the first half with a 2-0 lead.  The scoring continued unanswered in the second half with Sawyer Kisken (Fairbanks, AK) scoring his first ever Rev’s goal in the 61st minute off a pass in the 6-yard box from teammate Fabio Junior (Leominster, Mass.).  Junior closed the game with a goal of his own in the 83rd minute of play.  The Revs secured a solid 4-0 win over DC United.

Both youth Revolution clubs have already qualified for the U.S. Soccer Development Academy’s playoffs which take place later this month. The U16s won the Northeast Division with an 8-2-0 record (14-7-8 overall), while the U18s finished in second place in their division with a 6-4-0 record (14-11-4 overall). It was the first time either time qualified for the playoffs in the program’s second year of existence. The U16s and U18s will travel to Greensboro, N.C. on June 24 and participate in three games each of pool play to fight for a spot in the championship round which takes place in July at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., home of MLS’ LA Galaxy and Chivas USA.
