Prior to the 1999 season, the Revolution acquired former U.S. Men’s National Team captain John Harkes, Giovanni Savarese and Dan Calichman to help boost the team’s lineup and aim for a return bid to MLS Cup Playoffs.

Walter Zenga inserted himself back into the Revolution goal for 25 games, serving as player/coach, and was named MLS Player of the Week in April.

The Revs earned a pair shootout victories in May, followed by two wins to start June. The Revs made several acquisitions in mid-season obtaining defender Mario Gori, midfielder Leonel Alvarez and midfielder Jeff Baicher, but the team was unable to come together and make a late-season run toward the playoffs.

Despite having three other Players of the Week – Joe–Max Moore, Savarese and Ivan McKinley – early in the season, the Revolution concluded its fourth campaign at 12-20. Moore and Savarese combined to score 25 of the team’s 38 goals.

For the second consecutive year there was a late-season coaching change. Zenga was relieved of his playing and coaching duties and replaced by Steve Nicol for the team's final two matches. Nicol guided the Revs to wins in both games – victories over rivals MetroStars and D.C. United – to close the season.
