Foxborough, Mass. - The New England Revolution (3-4-4, 13 pts.) continued its trend of late-game comebacks with a goal in the 86th minute to tie conference-leading D.C. United 1-1 in front of a season-high 16,209 fans Saturday night at Gillette Stadium.
Andy Dorman converted the game-tying goal for the Revolution. The play was set up by José Cancela, who took a free kick from the right flank from about 40 yards from goal. Cancela’s serve was knocked down with a header by forward Taylor Twellman which then ricocheted off D.C. defender Bobby Boswell before finding Dorman, who hit a side volley on the full turn back off the far left post and in. It was Dorman’s third goal of the season and the second consecutive game that the third-year midfielder scored the game-tying goal for the Revs in the closing minutes.
D.C. (7-1-5, 26 pts.) got on the board, against the run of play, just before the end of the first half, with Jaime Moreno’s 44th minute tally. His 102nd career MLS goal and eighth of the year came from 20 yards out, as he beat Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis with a shot from the right side, just beyond the penalty arc. Lucio Filomeno assisted on the goal.
The Revs created several good scoring chances in the first half. Forward Kyle Brown, making his first career MLS start, took a 20th-minute pass from Dorman right in front of goalkeeper Troy Perkins’ net, and after chesting the ball to the ground, his shot sailed over the crossbar.
Dorman then nearly gave the Revs a lead in the 31st minute. From the middle third of the field, Jeff Larentowicz sent a pass to Dorman, who took the ball inside the 18-yard box from the right side and unleashed a shot that crashed off the left post.
In the 41st minute, Twellman was played in clean through behind the defense for a breakaway. Twellman, one-on-one with Perkins, saw his shooting angle cut down bravely by Perkins, who went low to make the save. Twellman tracked down the rebound but was unable to turn his follow-up shot on the frame of goal.
In the second half, Twellman had a shot blocked by a D.C. defender with Perkins out of the net and the rebound was corralled by Revolution midfielder Steve Ralston, who fired from 18 yards away, but his shot was wide left.
Reis had an impressive night, recording a season-high eight saves on nine D.C. shots, the most shots on goal by a Revolution opponent this season. In the 26th minute, Freddy Adu got through the Revolution defense and took a shot from 12 yards away, forcing Reis to his left for the save. In the 72nd minute, Reis dove to his right and deflected another Adu shot from six yards out. Shortly after the Revs’ equalizer, in the 87th minute, Reis saved a close-range Boswell shot by tipping the ball over the crossbar.
The Revolution now embarks on a two-game road trip, visiting the Columbus Crew this Wednesday, June 21, at 7:30 p.m. ET and then Real Salt Lake on Saturday, June 24, at 9:00 p.m. ET. Both games will be televised live on Fox Sports Net and will also be broadcast on by WEEI 850 AM (English -tape delay) and WJDA 1300 AM (Spanish). The Revs will return to Gillette Stadium on Wednesday, June 28 to host FC Dallas at 7:30 p.m. Call 1-877-GET-REVS for ticket information.
