Youth Update: Revs vs. Red Bulls

Youth teams go 1-1-1 against MLS rival the New York Red Bulls

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – On Sunday, Oct. 21, all three of the New England Revolution’s youth teams were back in action, hosting fellow MLS club the New York Red Bulls at Regis College in Weston, Mass. Combined, the Revs' youth teams went 1-1-1 on the day.

UNDER-18s
The Under-18s suffered a 5-2 loss to the Red Bulls, giving up two late goals as they searched for an equalizer. New York drew first blood in the sixth minute, as Alex Muyl netted his first to put the visitors ahead before Erik Sa doubled their advantage in the 28th minute. Second-year Rev Matthew Nyeayea (Worcester, Mass.) then combined with Dominik Machado (Attleboro, Mass.) in the 30th minute to pull one back for New England. Muyl scored his second goal of the game just before halftime, sending the Revs into the break facing a two-goal deficit. Willis Griffith (Amherst, N.H.) tallied the Revs’ second goal in the 57th minute, assisted by Christian Sady (North Andover, Mass.). The home side strove to pull even for the remainder of the match, but New York’s Ismar Tandir scored a pair of goals in the 89th and 90th minutes to secure the Red Bull victory.

UNDER-16s
The Under-16s came away with a scoreless draw against the Red Bulls. Anchored by a stingy defense, New England goalkeeper Austin Aviza (Medway, Mass.) made several saves en route to his first shutout of the year. Forward Gabe Gissie (Worcester, Mass.) came close on multiple occasions, but was unable to capitalize on his breakaway opportunities. Steven Duncan (Barrington, R.I.) came close to putting New England ahead, hitting the crossbar on a free kick. Ultimately unable to break the deadlock, the teams finished tied, 0-0.

UNDER-14s
The Under-14s earned a 2-1 victory against the Red Bulls in a come-from-behind effort. New York scored first in the 39th minute, just before halftime, but the Revs equalized in the 50th. Daniel Jones (West Hartford, Conn.) fired the initial shot, but Aaron James (Amherst, Mass.) latched on to the rebound, sending a half-volley into the back of the net. New England then came up with the game-winner in the 72nd minute as Justin Rennicks (South Hamilton, Mass.) headed home Jones’ service to improve the U14s’ record to 2-1-0.

The youth teams next face Met Oval at Regis College in Weston, Mass, on Sunday, Oct. 28. The U14s will kick off at 1 p.m., followed by the U18s at 2:30 p.m. and the U16s at 5 p.m.
