Academy Overview

The Revolution Academy presented by United Healthcare, is a fully-integrated training and development program for youth soccer players, ages 7 and up, in the New England and Western New York areas.

The goal of the Revolution Academy is to train and develop young men who have the ability and desire to play soccer at the highest levels, including collegiate soccer and ultimately, professional soccer for the New England Revolution and the U.S. National Team, in its two distinct arms:

  • Player Development Program
  • Academy Youth Teams

Player Development Programs

The Revolution Academy’s Player Development Programs are among the most innovative youth training programs in Major League Soccer, training players of all abilities in every aspect of the game: ball mastery, speed of play, movement on and off the ball and coordination and balance.

Beginning with local- and club-level training programs, and on up with Regional Development Schools and Summer Residential Programs, Player Development Programs offer instruction and training programs for players of every skill and ability level to help them improve as players and individuals:

Current Training Programs

  • Town Association & Club Training
  • Summer Academy
  • Taylor Twellman Goal Scoring Academy
  • High School Academy
  • Regional Development Schools (RDS)
  • RDS Summer Academy
  • Residential Academy (Summer)

The region’s top players have additional opportunities with the Revolution Academy Youth Teams: Under-18s, Under-16s and Under-14s. Most of the players who advance to the Revolution’s Youth Teams come through the Player Development Programs and have had on-going training in the Revolution’s youth system, specifically through the Regional Development Schools (RDS).

Revolution Youth Teams

The New England Revolution has three boys’ youth teams that represent the New England Revolution and compete on a national stage: Under-18s, Under-16s and Under-14s.

The U18s and U16s play in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy and the U14s in U.S. Club Soccer’s Northeast Pre-Academy League.

The Revolution’s Youth Teams, which the U.S. Soccer Federation rated among the nation’s top eight youth programs last year, is the only fully-funded youth soccer program in New England. Qualified and talented players are accepted into the program without regard to their financial situation.

All players’ needs and expenses related to soccer activities – training, facilities, equipment, uniforms, travel associated with competitions – are provided by the Revolution at no cost to the players or their families.

Revolution youth players are afforded unique playing opportunities not available to players at other regional clubs. Top performers have the opportunity to train with the Revolution first team during school breaks, and also are eligible to be called up to play against professionals in the MLS Reserve League alongside first-team players.

Additionally, the Revolution’s Youth Teams receive invitations to play internationally, and most recently competed in the prestigious 2012 Future Champions Guateng tournament in Johannesburg, South Africa, where the team earned a sixth-place finish – the highest finish by an American club in tournament history.

The top Revolution Youth players also have the opportunity to eventually join the Revolution first team without going through the MLS SuperDraft process.

In 2006, Major League Soccer announced an initiative that created a “Homegrown Protected List” for each team. Clubs can retain the professional rights of players developed within its youth academy so they can sign them directly from their youth programs, or after the players end their collegiate careers.
